Does 6MT really outperforms by such a wide margin???
I was just driving normally today and a Z pulled over and said nice ride! Of course coming from a fellow cousin, I repaid with the same courtesy. Then he asked is that 6MT or 5AT and the moment I said 5AT he just shook his head and raced off. So I thought that was kinda rude so i followed. Now I know there was a lag between teh two transmission, but i was still able to tail this guy when i was in manual mode..... And sorry if i'm not being informed enough, but how come the damn Z sounds so much louder (but with stock exhaust)....
Thanks for listening to me ranting

AT's are just fine. Especially, in my area with all of the hills. I'll be heading over to the AT ranks in a few more years. What I do not understand is why some members continually bash drivers, whom have a different tranny . . . Go figure. Enjoy what you have!
I found with the AT loaner car that the downshifts had a .5-1.0 second delay when I went from steady to an abrupt wide open throttle..... and the manumatic mode was somewhat sluggish in response... was a g35x loaner sedan... I've never been a big fan of automatic transmissions, but definately more civilized for my daily commute to work... as for track/autox, 6mt all the way.... you can't have as much control as you would in an 6mt.... does the 6mt outperform the AT by a wide margin? not necessarily but perhaps a slight one
The 6MT barely outperforms the 5AT. Only considering perfect shifts on a 6MT, it can pull ahead of a 5AT.
To me, and expecially nowadays when higher horse power engines dont suffer from such a loss in the torque converter (take the 400hp GTO, the TC loss is so negligable that the auto runs a 0-60 0.2 seconds faster than the 6 spd.) its not about speed - Its more about the pure fun factor. There is absolutely nothing like having complete control over the car, and having the clutch available. I love having a clutch under my foot.. just not when I'm sitting in traffic, or on long trips, or when I simply just feel like kicking back and not shifting. Thats why I love the 5AT along with my weekend car with a 6 speed.

For average "drivers with no track experience especially at drag strips", and for "light to light runs", the automatic would have the advantage. Many will probably won't want to admit it, but it is true. The extra 20hp for manuals, don't mean anything without lightning quick & crisp speed shifts and "consistent" launches (60' times)......

Actually, for an automatic the G isn't really 'bad'. It is slower than my 6MT (with me driving) however the older 5AT's (like the one in SFLG35's car) really is snappy as heck. The newer 2005's seem to be slower in responding to the shifts, but maybe that's why they're "better" as far as longevity is concerned?
