I made a mistake

I started moving from a stop light, and I thought I was in Manumatic, so I shifted up. Unfortunately, I was in D, which means I ended up in NEUTRAL, at around 20MPH! Yayks, the engine made a real loud noice, so I quickly put it back in D. Do you think this could have caused a significant damage, or is the car able to handle this kind of error on drivers part? I hope I didn't damage anything...

Re: I made a mistake

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeell,
That's been done b4 without any bad. Does it seem OK? Then it's prolly OK.
Would have been much better to let the rpm's drop b4 putting it back into D, but that's hindsight.
Tell you what, Give her a and talk nice to her, and she'll be just fine.

What happened with that? That must have broken something? Isn't there a lockout that prevents you from shifting into park while the car is moving?

Hahaha, been there done that!! As a matter of fact, I made the _exact same post_ as you a couple of weeks ago. You, me, and a bunch of other people on this board are in the same boat. Don't worry, your car is fine. Don't do it again though!!!

Re: I made a mistake

I sure as hell won't do it again. I am glad I am not the only one who had done this. Actually, this had happened to me before in my Altima, when my old girlfriend was doing you know what (I won't get into the details). She accidentally throw the car into Neutral, while I was going about 30MPH - that was an interesting moment .
Regarding the above post, where someone throught it in "Park"... It must have been done intentionally, because you have to press the lock button on the shifter, before you can throw it into "Park". I think you even need to press that button in order to switch into "reverse". It's amazing the car is still alive after going into reverse and into park at 45MPH. That's really nasty!

Re: I made a mistake

Whats the big deal with putting it in "N"? Not sure what the sound was, but there is nothing wrong with putting your can in "N" while driving. Thats why on Auto trannys, there is no lock to stop you from doing it. I used to do it all the time in my Max, whenever there would be a cop behind me. This shouldn't hurt the tranny or the motor. Now something like 100mph, I'd probably think twice about putting it back into "D"!!! I think they design the trannys to do this, so if your traveling along at 60mph (or whatever speed), and your engine dies, your can throw it in "N" and try to restart it. Also good for those times when you think you can make the next gas station, and find out the hard way you couldn't. You can throw it into "N" and get a little extra distance to pull over safely and what not.

Re: I made a mistake

Theres nothing wrong with putting the car into Neutral, even at high speed, but it's not a good idea to drop it back into Drive at high rpms, you know the old wives tale of the "Neutral Drop"? Well this is almost, sorta, kinda the same thing, but less damaging because the gears are already moving, and all that has to be done is a lockup back into Drive.

Re: I made a mistake

Dude, Putting the tranny in N is fine if that's all we're talking about, but it's a little more than that------Accellerating maybe briskly and shifting into N without lifting from the throttle is something a little different. Red line comes up fast while the revs skyrocket. Compounding the issue is throwing it quickly back into D at high rpm's. These aren't things you want to do every day altho the odd 'mistake' is prolly ok.
You say you're not sure what the sound was, well the sound was the engine at or approaching redline which happens quickly revving under a no load situation.
BTW, coasting in N without power might be ok as long as you're going straight, but turning would be a little hazardous and difficult (unless you think to crank the engine to get some power back to the steering).
I'm not sure we were all talking about the same things here so I had to clarify..

"silly silly ATboys"

I don't see what having a AT has to do with it...

Back in the day when I used to have my M3 I could recall doing that on a few occasions as well... AT or Manual didn't matter... Had it in 3rd.. Put it in neutral so I could coast it and had to rev but accedently rev'd to high to put it back in 3rd...
