The transmission tries to rpm match so that shifting is smoother - if you jam it into 1st going fast you will damage this system...
That was my understanding, I could be wrong - but I would never, ever shift into a low gear going at high speed, clutch in or not. Hope you haven't fried your transmission already... best of luck.

You are absolutely correct.

It really just sounds like you dont know how to drive stick well yet. Your probably getting a clunk because you let go of the clutch too fast or you are just doing something wrong with your driving. It doesnt go into first because you shouldnt be going into first when you are going that fast. Of course you would hear grinding....your forcing it into gear!

Let me as you this, whoever the original poster is, didn't bother to look. When you disengage the clutch, how far are you pusing it to the floor, and how fast. It sounds like you'r slamming the clutch to the floor, these clutches are set high, if you want to shift you literally only have to tap the clutch down 1/2 ince to 1 inch, if you want to be safe, push it down half way, But do it smoothly. I shift with no noise and no grinding this way all the time. Now, as far as shifting into first, you have something called synchro meshed gears, what this meas is that the car will synchro the gears where it thinks you want to shift. That's why if you are say in 4th gear, at 3500 rpm and you try to shift into 5th, if you just shift up without really directing the shifter to either side it will slide into 3rd, because it is tuned as a sport car. Its looking to get you the best power curve not the best gas mileage. Now if your in 4th taching at 6800 and you just push up, it will slide into 5th.

I too get the occasional clunk noise when releasing the clutch into first, then sometimes when shifting into second. I also get the clunky rattle when shutting the car off with the shifter in neutral.
I brought my car to the dealer to have them check it out. Got a loaner of course. They investigated, found nothing wrong and could not reproduce the noise. I had to go back to the dealer and drive with the technician in the car, and then he heard it. They investigated for another day and found where the noise was coming from. He said that the noise was coming from the drivetrain input shaft. Not sure where that is. I am no car pro by any means. Anyway, the dealer said it was a normal sound. I found that if I keep the initial revs up, while releasing the clutch into first, at around 2000, the noise is almost not there. The shutting down noise, I assume will probably work itself out as I drive it more. I only have 2200 miles, so this thing is still quite new.
I hope this helps.
