Dont need to let it idle that long man. That may have been true for the carbureuter days but no more. Start the car and let it idle for a minute so that the oil pressure comes up and circulates. Once the idle drops to normal idle speed ur good to go. I dont know anyone who waits 7 minutes to drive their car. Just take it easy for the first few minutes of driving as tranny fluid, diff fluid etc need to be warmed up!

I thought idling just burns an EXTREMELY small amount of gas, I could be wrong.

I usually only let it go about 30 seconds. If its very cold weather, I usually let it go for about a minute before I pull away. Much more important than that, is that you dont accelerate hard until the needle is in operating range, preferribly the middle.
The only real issue here is when people start their cars up in 10° weather, and slam the gas right away.

Actually if you drive less than 15 mins distance, you do not have to warm up ur car, because when the engin finally getting heated , you shut it down, that will affect your car. Althought, if you drive more than 15 mins distances you should warm up ur car till C bar, or when Rpm goes up to 1000, or maybe jsut warm less than 5 mins...
