How many miles did you have on your tires? If they are worn down, it will easily kick your back end out even if you're going slow.
Did you slam the brakes as you were sideways or lift off all of sudden? Because that will always gurantee a kick-back. Next time when it happens, ease the gas pedal slowly and counter-steer gently... you will be able to slowly recover, and when you do, ease up the counter steer as you recover so you don't kick back the other way. Don't touch the brakes unless you're in unrecoverable spin because slamming the brakes will send you into a spin. I think it would be good idea for anyone to try going sideways in a safe place, because in situations like that, you'll know what to do. I am no way an expert drifter, but practicing a bit saved my car and my life numerous times.
Anyway, I'm glad to hear that you and your gf walked out. Hopefully they total your car so you can just get a new one instead of having to keep a fixed one, which never feels the same.
Oh, and VDC probably wouldn't have saved you. Traction control resulted in sudden kick-back and almost sent me into spin numerous times, so I like to turn them off.

My first g had 23,000 miles on it and i replaced the tires twice. I jus reached 20 thousand on my o4 and haven't replaced the tires yet, its all about how hard you drive your car, my 1st one i drove like a maniac i can't stand hearing people blame vdc all the time, it gets annoying

Are you driving 100+ mph or something? I've driven on a track numerous times with VDC on and have never experienced anything like what you mention, even when my car is past the limit and VDC is doing everything in its power to keep me from spinning out.

I was just referring to conventional traction control systems... I guess VDC is a lot better than those. Since I had bad experiences with traction controls in the past, I don't really trust them over my driving skills and I like to turn them off. Plus I don't really like the feeling when it kicks in.
