Downshifting bad for MPG?
i downshift regularly from 6th to 3rd, to pass cars on the freeway (the car feels slow otherwise) or to slow down on off ramps (sometimes i go into 4th and then 3rd). I revmatch perfectly. I used to downshift into 2nd, but it hit the rev limiter twice and now i go into 3rd and it never hits redline. Is that bad?
I've got an off-topic question.
To move the shifter from a gear to neutral, does it require stepping on the clutch pedal? Someone told me today that I can simply move it to neutral without touching the clutch pedal. Is that correct information?

The only way the engine would consume more gas, would be if you rev-match before downshifting. That would mean you blip the throttle for a second or so, and raise the gas levels in the cylinders. As soon you let off the gas and let the engine-braking do its job, there is no gas consumption whatsoever.
