How bad does this hurt?

I just purchased a G35 (used 2004 6MT with navi) a few days ago, so I am both new to the G itself and new to daily-driving a car with a MT. My previous car was a 97 Infiniti I30.

Anyhow, still getting used to driving around suburban/city situations with a manual.

Twice, I had the car parked with brake on (once with hand brake other time with regular brake), and while the car was in first i let go of the clutch by accident not remembering it was not in neutral. The car obviously lunged forward and stalled. How bad is this for the car? I am not implying I want to do this regularly, but the two times I did do it (and the who-knows how many times it was done by the previous owner)...how seriously does this affect the engine, tranny, etc? Thanks

first of congrats on your purchase you made a smart choice on MT.

ahh.. this brings me back 5 years ago when I first learned how to drive a stick... it was pretty funny actually.. I stalled out like 50 times in a car.. it was a Toyota Celica 6 speed and boy.. I felt like an idiot but it was the **** cuz I was a young kid with a hot car.. (now that im older not really!)

Anyways.. you should be alright man dont worry too much and have fun.. you'll get the hang of it real quick...

I also need to mention not only did I stall out 50 times, I also beat the hell out of the car everyday and it was still fine.. this is my first driving year so I racked up a good 22k miles in 4 months.

+1.....
Congrats on the new ride bro, and welcome to 'Driver.
Don't worry about stalling out occasionally....it happens to everyone.
Enjoy
C.

you'll stall the car, but instead of thinking "oh well, everyone does it", use it as a learning experience.

It really is great because i'll even do it from time to time, but i don't beat myself up for it, it just helps me get to know my car a lot more and really finding that spot on clutch that makes my car happy!

hey bro, don't worry too much about the stalling..cuz' that's the only way you gonna learn. When i first bought my manual car back in 2000, I took a chance driving the car home without knowing anything about manual car. It was 1 hour drive of hell and stalling over 30 times. I'll never forget that day.

it is like a day of hell.. i took my car right from the dealer not knowing how to drive manual.. the salesman sort of gave you a short tutorial on how to drive a manual, it was jerking shifts and stalling out all the way home..

The biggest problem I had was getting the feel of releasing the clutch in order to get the car going.. after that it was no problem but I hated when lights turned red, stop signs, etc.. I stalled out at a light and couldnt get the car going I would stall over and over and some guy came out of his truck and asked me if I needed help.. the car is brand new so it doesnt seem like it messed up or anything.

Since then.. I have stalled out maybe.. 3-4 times in 4 different manual trans cars. Not yet with my G

yes.. ALOT of people honked, I remember I was at a light and as soon as it turned green and I tried to take off I stalled out, so many times that the light turned back red again.. people behind me was pissed, then when it became green again samething.. it was so hard to get the damn thing going. At one point I didnt want a manual trans and avoided driving my car at times but now it's the greatest thing that ever happened to me. I'm fine with driving the manual in bumper to bumper traffic for 1 1/2 hours it really doesn't bother me.

It's tough to drive stick if you've never had a good stick teacher. I sucked the first few manual transmission cars I drove around briefly until I actually had someone teach me how to drive. I initially thought it was all about quickly pressing the gas pedal while quickly releasing the clutch. hahah such a n00b was I. Then I learned it's not a fast transition but a slow one, at least when you first start.

Best way to explain it simply is: On a level surface: With the clutch pedal depressed and the car in first gear, slowly depress the gas pedal and get your rpms to hover around 2.5k rpm. Now keeping them there, slowly let out the clutch. As you feel it start to grab the rpms will dip down but don't worry. Keep your right foot where it is and keep slowly letting up on the clutch pedal with your left foot. Once the car starts moving and the rpms recover a bit, you're in gear so let off the clutch pedal completely. You're in gear!

Now clutch pedal back in, off the gas, brake to a stop. Repeat the process until you get comfortable with where the clutch starts to engage (point where the rpms start to dip and then the car starts to move).

Congrats!
Like everyone said. Don't worry about stalling. It happens to everyone even if you've been driving manual for years.

You'll get the hang of it. This is not the easiest car to learn on too. I learned to drive manual on a civic... that car is really easy to learn on.

good luck. I'm sure you'll have it down by the time you read this.

Oh no, not again.................

Hey, no sweat we've "ALL" pulled this one. Even after
years of driving you'll be sitting at a light, relaxed
and BAM traffic takes off and you let the clutch out
to fast........stall! The only thing that gets hurt is
your PRIDE.....

congrats on the purchase, bro!

i myself picked mine a 3 days ago and i can't even begin to describe how much i love this car. I come from two RSX type-S's so being in a G35 is a world of difference!

With respect to the clutch, everyone has pretty much hit on the subject already: some cars are much easier to learn on than others. In my experience, the G isn't really the best to start off with, but you'll learn either way. Don't worry about beating up the car, it can take it. Think of it as the car going "WHAT THE F**K????" when you stall. Just start her up, and keep it movin.

Now I have a question for you guys. Anyone else with an 04 6mt feeling any rattle in their clutch and shifter at low rpms? I am concerned that there may be an issue with mine. Now, I'm no mechanic, but when i can literally FEEL the rattle in the shifter and clutch pedal, something is not right. Anyone know what might be happening?

Answer

Original Question: "while the car was in first i let go of the clutch by accident not remembering it was not in neutral. The car obviously lunged forward and stalled. How bad is this for the car?"

Answer: I wouldn't worry about it. Nothing bad is happening. It's a lot worse trying to spin the tires, than the car launching like that and stalling, so remember not do it, but if it does, don't worry. Same thing actually happened to me when I got home one day and was talking on the phone, and thought the car was off. It's ok. Just try to remember and make a habbit of checking the shifter, or making sure the car is completely off before releasing the clutch if you're like me and always leave it in 1st. Good luck.
