DIY Oil Change

Okay, so I spent about 2 hours last night change my first oil at 1000mi. Went with 5W30 Mobil 1 Syn. oil and Frame filter (I gotta stock up on OEM filters). So after several attempts to get the car onto the Rhino ramp, no luck. That thing suck if you're trying to get the car up by yourself.

Anyway to make the long story short, removed a dozen + bolts fromt the under tray, empty the oil for 1/2 hour, and put in 5 quarts of oil. Started the engine and checked the level. HOLY CRAP! it was way about the high level. Is my quart too much? BTW, dipstick suck big D!ck!! Its hard to poll out without making a mess and its hard to get an accurate reading on the oil level.

ughhh... I'm just venting.
But seriously, is 5 quart too much? I got the 5qt. Mob. 1 container and dumped the whole thing in. late.

The $38 that I pay the dealership to change the oil for me seems more and more worth it.

I only added about 4.6 qts. to mine. According to the $hitty dipstick, the level read max. From what I've read, the OEM filters are far inferior to many of the aftermarket ones.

$38 for M1 synthetic? What dealer is this? I paid $75 for my FX. That's pretty good deal. Advantage with DIY is that I get to make sure everything is in good shape and clean. And no ghetto mech. will mess with my car.

would anyone recommend wasting the money on K&N oil filter? What's best or recommended filter?

What's the worse that can happen with high oil level? Maybe I should dump some out.

Anyone notice why the G's filters are so small? I have a 2.2L Civic and that filter is almost twice the size. I couldn't believe how small the Frame's was. I thought I read the wrong part number. It was smaller than stock!

$38 for non-synthetic. I'm probably never going to need to go synthetic considering the weather here in so-cal.

I'd like to know the real advantage to synthetics. The last couple conversations I had on the topic with "track knowlegable" people didn't like synth, with comments like "I would never use recycled oil".

What's the real news on synth oil? Anyone have a good web link?

Yeah Nissans have the crappiest dipsticks I have ever seen, the G35 one especially because its all angled. When I changed the oil on my friends G35 I always put in 5 and checked it, usually took 5 and a half from my experience.

Our G's are known for having the $hittiest dipsticks EVER! but 5 quarts should be perfect. I used a 5w-30 mobil1 with a napa oil filter and it was right on the max. If you're not sure then do something like 4.5 so you wont be low, but you wont be over. The only reason your dipstick showed waaaay over max is because our dipsticks are GAY and you have to let the car sit for a while before you check it. I've changed the oil on a couple other G's besides mine at my work and they're all the same.

might of been a good idea to wait untill 10-15k before putting slick synthetic in there due to vave/ring seating etc.

Everyone says that, newer cars dont need that much time for the piston rings/seals to seat. Most already come seated, i switched to full syn at 2K and no problems at 10K..... cant beleive everything the dealer tells you...

40K car ---> I'll do it myself so i know it gets done right and i dont have some dooche bag tech at the stealership working on my car, plus you get more of a sentimental value for your car if you work on it yourself.
