I have an 05 A/T and I have the same problem, but only MM mode. It usually happens when I am at rest and then proceed to make a turn. I shift from 1st to 2nd around 4k rpm and then from 2nd to 3rd around 4k rpm and that is when I get the jerk, but after that the shifting is alot smoother. I will try and ease up on the throttle and see if that helps

KlokDeezal, the issue you are having and the issue i'm talking about are totally different. You are having a hard downshift in MM which I also expierence, but that is probably a standard function of how the tranny, and mapping is setup becuase it does it everytime you down shift to those gears. The issue your having seems to be normal and shouldnt cause any issuesin the future. My issue is with normal driving, with the car shifting on its own causing a rough jerk, which could cause major tranny/engine issues in the near future when the warranty is over, which isnt why I paid almost 40K. The question remains, has anyone been able to duplicate my issue?

No prob, but you should probably be just as concerend as I am becuase it could be something that you have become acustomed to but could really affect you in the future. If we could duplicate it everytime, the dealership would have to do something about it.
thanks

I have a 04.5 coupe and when I first got my car, I could feel a discernable thump going from 2nd to 3rd in manual mode. I asked if this was normal on the G35 and 350Z board and most people said they didn't feel anything like that. I asked the dealer and he said it was normal

I haven't used the manual mode too much because it feels like i'm kinda abusing the tranny but 6-months after my initial inquiry, numerouos threads started popping up on both the boards regarding this mysterious "thump." I think the 04.5 and up got a revised TCU that shifted more aggressively than previous TCUs. Although the manumatic function became less laggy (although not too much less), it kinda roughed up the shifting.

EZZ, I heard about the upgraded TCU also, although if it were that, all of the shifts would be jerky. The thump/shake I am speaking of and earlier posters spoke about, only occurs once at about 40 MPH, and isnt a pleasnt/normal feeling, any other opinions?

Lemme hop in here and share my experience with your problem, COMPNET...I know exactly the "thunk" you're talking about. I'm driving along on a flat surface, doing about 40-50 and the car will just shudder for no reason at all. I asked my dealer about it, and he knew what I was talking about just from my description. He told me that since the transmission (and the car for that matter) is so computerized, the TCU "brain" gets confused sometimes and isn't sure what gear to be in. He then told me that there's not much you can do for it, besides getting a new transmission. So, I guess I'll just let it be...it is kind of embarrassing/strange when it happens when you've got passengers in the car and you have to explain to them that your luxury sports coupe gets confused sometimes... oh well...that's just my $0.02...

Hootie, thats exactly what I was looking for, I think that the issue is one that will have a horrible affect on the longevity of our tranny's, ill let you guys know if I figure something out that will help us.

thanks!

I've heard from many people that we have very strong transmissions. in fact, our tranny's are the same ones that are used in the Q45. I was worried about the "thunk" affecting the longevity of the tranny too, but if it only happens every once in a while, I don't think it does any serious damage...it's just more annoying than anything...

From 2nd to 3rd, the auto transmission is kind of unique. You either need to shift at low rpms or really high rpms. When you are racing or driving hard you will notice that the 2nd to 3rd shift is not bad. It's just when you hold a constant speed at around 4k right? There are many old threads about this, but I think its true. It's something to do with the transmission. From 2nd to 3rd, either shift at high or low rpms. No middle.

The only thing I've noticed once n a while, is if I start off fast then slow down suddenly (no brake, just let off the gas) the transmission acts like it is not sure what gear to go in and gets jerky, but as soon as I let off the gas more, smooths right out. Probably, because I am not sure what I am doing!
Curious if anyone turned off VDC and see if it changes your symptoms.
Maybe if you drive it a certain way, the VDC gets cues that you are in a mode that might result in wheelspin. Sounds weird I know, but with all these control overrides, it may not be too far out there.

it happened to me too many times and took it to the dealer, they could not find anything wrong with the tranny but it felt as if the tranny was skipping a gear or somethin or shifting too soon, anyone find the cause?
