Motor Trend long-term G35 coupe
Anyone read the latest update? They say that their dealer did an oil change and rotated their tires from side to side. They claim that the coupe cannot have a traditional rotation because the front and rear wheels have a different offset.
Didn't they notice that the rear tires are wider than the fronts? And more importantly, didn't their dealer know that the Pilot Sports are directional tires? If they swapped tires from side to side, then the tires are turning in the wrong direction! Unless of course they remounted the tires on the rims.
BTW, they ARE driving a 6 speed coupe, so yes, they have the 18 inch wheels/tires.

I read the article, too. The charge for the oil change and tire rotation was over $90 BECAUSE they had to break the tires off the wheels and remount them on the other sides to maintain tire directionality.

The service dept. did this to my coupe. I drove it about 10 ft. and the car wobbled like it was drunk. This was an error by both the service writer and the mechanic. Both should have known. They do now and I doubt it will happen to anyone else at this dealership. They were very apologetic about the whole thing.

Wow, pretty odd. One of the first things you know about this car is that you are NOT supposed to rotate the tires at all. I was under the impression that even side-to-side rotation is all wrong.
How many miles should we expect out of our 18" Pilot Sports anyways??

Removing it from the tire from the rims and switching them is fine. Due to our camber the inner tire wears alot faster than the outer edge. Switching them around can increase the tire wear to another 5+ miles
I had Pilots Sports on my other car, they lasted about 27K miles.

Re: Motor Trend long-term G35 coupe
G35 Fanatic, the answer is simple. Our front tires have a width of 225mm and our rear tires have a width of 235mm. So rotating the tires (swapping front and rears) is impossible. To rotate left and right is impossible as well, as the tires wear from the inside out or something like that.
Also, as I understood it, the Pilot Sports on our cars are supposed to last only around 12K miles...can anyone confirm this?

Re: Motor Trend long-term G35 coupe
I got my tries rotated from my dealer. I have a 6MT Black Coupe. The tires are directional. What they do is they remove the tire from the wheel and switch it to the other side. It's 50 bucks for a set of 2 tires. I didn't notice a difference after I tried it. I don't recommend you getting weedled into doing it at 8,000 miles. I also talked to this guy Tom I know who is the service manager at Cresmont Volkswagon. He was my Scuba Diving Instructor. He said that I didn't need it and that I was wasting my money. It can't hurt though.

Re: Motor Trend long-term G35 coupe
I have 12,800 freeway and commuting miles on my 6MT and there is plenty tread left for I think another 12k. The wear seems to be pretty consistant with lower that Z rated tires and I drive like a maniac. Also in my opinion it is a waste of time and money get the extra few hundred miles afforded by having the tires removed from the wheel and rotated right to left or whatever. Also I remember talking about this with somebody at America's Tires with my last car and he said when you remove the wheel from the rims repeatedly there is more chance for damage to the sidewall and is not recommend as a rotation procedure. Peace.
