This "sound" has happened twice since I got my car 2 months ago. To start, I have an 06 5AT coupe. It seems to happen when I start off from a stop and then let off of the gas before the car shifts into 2nd. It sounds like a scraping sound somewhere in the front. I can't reproduce it intentionally. Another thing to mention, is that it occured with a normal take off. I wasn't getting on it at all. Any ideas?

Could be that your heat shield is loose. Very distinct sound.

Does it scratching sound only occur when you start up the car and drive around 15 mph? After this happens, it doesn't happen anymore until the next time you start up the car?

Interested what this would mean.

^ Its the ABS self test. I wouldnt worry. It does it on mine everytime I back out my drive way and once I drive off it makes the spring-retraction like noise.

I am glad you guys brought this up. I also have a 06' AT. I noticed the same sound. It only happens when I reverse then go forward and just before the car goes into second gear. If I do not reverse it does not happen.

What a odd noise from a ABS... what is it doing?

That's interesting. I noticed it after I backed up then went forward and it did occur right before 2nd gear.

ABS self test. It's done it in my 6mt and in all the AT loaners. If you accel slow enough after startup w/ the windows down, you will notice it has nothing to do with going in reverse or shifting to second. It just does it around 10-15mph or so. You won't hear it again until you shut 'er down and start over again (even then i think it takes a while before it does the test again or maybe not). You just won't hear or notice the sound everytime you drive, but it's there.

Now i did have a problem with the ABS sensor, which made that same noise, but a little louder and in pulses sorta, w/ what felt like pressure drops in the brakes. If you get that during normal driving get your ABS sensored checked out.

Thats good to finally hear about someone that actually knows what that sound is. I have had that sound since the beginning and thought it always seemed a bit odd. I took it into the dealer and tried to explain it to them and they had no idea what I was talking about. It seems like everything I have taken my car to the dealer about they haven't had a clue. Thanks for the info man....

does it happen all the time or only once after you start the car?
For me it happens only once when I start the car and not after that.

I figured I wasnt heating the car enough but tried all options before going waited anywhere from 3 secs to 5 minutes... and the weird noise will come no matter what. Damn annoying.

WYSIWGY - that explanation does make sense.

I will have the dealer check it out when I am in next, lets see if they can replicate the problem!
