Top Speed in the G?
Re: Top Speed in the G?
Car & Driver's recent review of the 6MT lists the top speed as being governed at 146 mph. It's possible that anybody who has topped that may be experiencing some speedometer error. It's also possible that C&D just recalled that data from their last review of the 5AT.
If I ever remember, I can try a top speed run with my Garmin GPS receiver. However, as stated earlier, even that may not be 100% accurate due to the "built-in" error required by the government for all civilian GPS receivers. I don't know if I have the cajones for a top speed run though. I'm not worried about doing triple digit speeds on a good, clear piece of straight road. I'm just worried about getting a ticket.

Re: Top Speed in the G?
That "built-in" error doesn't exist at present. The Clinton Administration disabled Selective Availability and opened up the higher levels of accuracy of the systems to Civilian receivers. It won't be 100%, but it'll be pretty close.

Re: Top Speed in the G?
Finally someone has gotten the word about "anti-spoofing" That was during Desert Storm. Since then the whole world has gone GPS. Most car makers employ GPS in their high end cars. I've used both mil and civ GPS. My civilian is as accruate as it gets. But @ 145 mph, you're asking the device a lot. But I have recorded speeds in excess of 300 mph in an airplane.
Re: Top Speed in the G?
FWIW, I've compared my handheld GPS at speeds up to 75MPH (vs. timing a mile with mile markers and road side radar), and it seems accurate.
My previous car was considerably off, but both my pickup and my G35 are within 1MPH to the speed on the GPS.
I don't know for a fact that the accuracy scales to 140, or even 100. I'm still in my breakin period, and haven't gone past a brief 85 while passing. I doubt I would go 100 unless I was safely on a western state highway, and I'm not the type to risk 140.

New to the board. I've had my G a little over a month, after waiting for 4 months for delivery of the 6 speed sedan. After the break in I took it up to 145. That's all she had. It was stable but the road I was pretty undulating. She was super stable at 120ish.

Geez, where can you guys drive this fast? Even on the Interstate here in NM it's impossible to get that fast, too many other cars on the road!

Great pic of the dash! And still running cool! You also had the Cruise Control Set?
Reminds me of a time quite a few years back...I rented some kind of sporty car on a San Francisco business trip (forget what) and drove to Lake Tahoe on the weekend to go skiing. As I am crusing over the Donor pass , I see snow for the first time (it was April and being from the East Coast , this was a unique sight in the spring) So I leaned over onto the back seat and felt around for my camera. I composed and snaped a great picture of the snow covered landscape. It was not until I got the picture developed that I noticed the speedo peged below the 140 MPH mark at the botton of the picture! Somethings never change!!

Re: Top Speed in the G?
I hit the mid 140 range a lot. Keep an eye out for a silver flash if you drive the 101 in the Valley. I average between 90-120 on a normal basis. Love that 5th gear.
P.S.

Re: Top Speed in the G?
GSGNG35,
The cruise control was on but not active, I guess between the pictures and the feeling I forgot to shut it off, someone mentioned it becomes innactive at a certain speed sowhere below 90 MPH I think.
