Hey I was just curious does everyone's car run really hot. I feel that the car runs really warm, as in if you are driving with the windows open you can feel the warmth of the car, and definitely when you get out of the car and are standing next to it you can truly notice that car runs very warm. The temp gauge is fine inside, etc, but just something I noticed. I used to have a Grand Cherokee v8 back in the day and I remember that ran something like the G. Any input appreciated just want to make sure that my car is not malfunctioning on me. thanks

 

I've noticed that also. The engine seems to put out more heat than my last car but the temp gauge is always normal.

 

my car too...im pretty sure that the fact its a performance engine has something to do with it, i know cooling=performance but its just a hunch....btw, u cant stand by my car wen it on without getin a sunburn on ur shin!

 

Tight engine bay with lots of heat.

Keep up on oil changes and radiator flushes and you should be fine.


Put a blower on it and then you will see some serious heat!

 

Taking off the engine cover has helped reduce the amount of heat trapped under the hood. I used to notice a lot of heat coming from the engine and after I installed my Grounding Gear I never put the engine cover back on and its been much cooler since.

 

RXM...the engine cover on top of the engine or the cover on the bottom?

 

The engine cover is the one on top of the engine that covers the plenum. Its the one that has the car's logo on it, remove it using a 10mm socket wrench.

Most stock vehicles run a good deal hotter than they need to for emmission purposes. Higher engine temps = better emmissions = poorer performance.

Unfortuneatly, the G simply has an analog gauge that can't tell you how how the engine coolant temp actually is. But I currenty have a car that can give you a digital temp, and I was shocked that the coolant temp was meant to run between 215-225 degrees. The answer is a lower thermostat, and if you do mostly highway driving, that would be all you need. But a lower tstat without fan control won't help in traffic or at the track.

 

How would a lower thermostat help? Once it gets up to a certain temp it is always open. Maybe I'm confused but it seems like most of the people who install the Nismo lower temp thermostat say it does not help anything and the car still runs at the same temp.

 

You're probably referring to folks that have done just the tstat. As I mentioned above, a lower tstat will keep the engine temps cooler only when air is flowing. So on the highway, a lower tstat without anything else will keep the engine temps cooler than the stock setup. In traffic, or at the track, you need something that will turns the fans on earlier than the stock programming, which can be done via a tuning tool like Hypertech, Superchips, etc, or you simply wire a switch so you can control the fans. I just installed a fan switch for my SRT and it was quite easy.
