NEED HELP...6 speed grinding

OK..so I know there have been a couple of posts regarding the manual tranny grinding..I have 5000 miles on mine and it has started grinding terribly if I shift from 2 to 6th and sometimes from 3rd to 6th. I took it to the dealer and he said that Infiniti says there is no problem and they were curious as to why I "Would drive like that" Geez...my last 2 cars were BMW's...a 540 and then an M5 and I always drove em' like that...am I alone? whats wrong with 2nd gear hitting 40 mph and then shifting straight to 6th for 45 MPH speed zones?

Re: NEED HELP...6 speed grinding

Sorry dude, but I'm with the dealer on this one. Why would you drive like that?

Re: NEED HELP...6 speed grinding

The problem with this sort of shift is that there is a HUGE difference in intermediate shaft speed that the 6th gear synchro has to overcome in order to shift. On my 6MT, 6th is VERY hard to get into directly from 2nd and if I push too hard, I get that grind. The trick is to double clutch on any shifts where the RPM difference between the two gears is huge. When you do this, the gears will go in smooth as butter.

Re: NEED HELP...6 speed grinding

There is a big diff in speed. You probably can't rush the shift. Try 1-3-6 if you want to skip gears. Take your time going into 6th. There is a point after you take it out of 2nd where you need to wait for the revs to come down to where they will be in 6th for the synchros to work best.

You are obviously not in a rush. I agree there are lots of times when running thru all the gears is kind of pointless with a high torque motor and not a lot reason to rush around.

Re: NEED HELP...6 speed grinding

I got a new tranny for the exact same reason. Call Infiniti consumer affairs and let them know you spoke with a gentlemen that had the same problem and that Fresno infiniti spoke with the factory and a new transmission was installed.
Install was within the last 45 days. Frankly I'd go to another dealer as this one does not deserve to profit a dime from any warranty work on your part.

I explained to them that sometimes when I'm accelerating I decide that since I'm at a speed appropriate for 6th, why waste time in the 4th or 5th, so I'd go directly to 6th, CRUNCH. NOT NORMAL!!! Plus the dealer was able to recreate the problem exactly as I said it was happening.

The dealer questioned you as to why you'd drive your car like that? It's the other way around, why are you asking me to accept a defect and why are you not willing to explain it to the factory in a supportive manner to the consumer. Their's no way the factory is getting the real story in your case.

Re: NEED HELP...6 speed grinding

Thanks for the responses..My original post wasn't really looking for any vindication in the way I drive my car! I know that most people who drive 6-speeds probably hit most, if not all of the gears on the way up to 6th. I guess I developed my habit whilst driving my last car (an M5) which had so much torque and pull that you really didn't need the other gears unless you were trying to set a 1/4 mile record. It would pull comfortably in 6th at 35 mph. The G is close enough in pull and handles 40 mph just fine in 6th. So rather risk spilling my morning coffee with my "Not quite awake yet" shifting I would tend to get to the final drive ratio quickly. My original point is that if you have the clutch ALL the way pushed in and your not revving the engine hard, which I'm not...that you shouldn't hear CRUNCH trying to put it in to gear.I'm not sure whether it's a defect or just a bad design which is I why I asked if others were experiencing the same thing! ALSO, it does it half the time from 3rd to 6th as well and nobody can convince me that there is anything wrong with that shift!

Rock on...Rock Forward!

Re: NEED HELP...6 speed grinding

Doesn't the manual on a Corvette force you from 3rd to 6th if you're not standing on the gas pedal?

I used to do that in an '86 Accord -- actually when I was being aggressive. Redline in 1st, redline in 2nd (now 50-something), then put it in 5th and cruise down the freeway. Seems like a normal thing to do.

Re: NEED HELP...6 speed grinding

shoot. i drive like that. i dont see what the problem with it is. no point in wasting gas in the other gears exactly. 6th is for cruising right. if you need to cruise at 30 mph, you need to cruise. whats there to explain.

Re: NEED HELP...6 speed grinding

I do alot of 1-3-5 or 1-2-4 in traffic without any grinding - tried the 2-6 and it was a tad rough. Maybe hit 4 on your way to 6?

Re: NEED HELP...6 speed grinding

well, hypothetically, even if you were to abuse your transmission, how would they prove that? plus, there is definitely something wrong with the transmissions = everyone is getting new ones. and finally, i really dont think going from 2nd to 6th is abusing the transmission. of course, you have to let the rpm's drop the correct amount before releasing the clutch as to "rev-match" but theres nothign wrong with it...IMO.

Re: NEED HELP...6 speed grinding

If the dealer would have told me to double clutch my car, a $30K car, a car that is defective, I would have made as much noise up the Infiniti food chain that I would have gotten justice one way or another. Thankfully I happened to go to a competent dealer that carried about their customers and didn't try and placate me with lies and deceit.
