Odd noise heard : advise sought

We recently had a spell of nice weather here and as such been driving more with the windows down. Because of that, I have heard this noise that is not normal. In the garage, I started the car..put it in reverse..then let the clutch out to back out. There is an additional sound (heard over the engine) that to me sounds like a chirping rattle as though something is loose. Upon depressing the clutch, it goes away. But as soon as the clutch is let out, the rattle returns. I have not tried to duplicate this in 1st gear moving forward yet but I do know that once the car is warmed up, I no longer hear that noise.
The noise is not very loud (would compare to a loose heat shield) but now that I have heard it, it drives me nuts.
Oh and btw the car has 55,000 miles, is a daily driver and not been tracked or raced except for some 'spirited' driving.
Thanks in advance for thoughts before I turn it into the dealership to hear them say 'Can't duplicate.'

What ^^ he ^^ said.

It sounds like something with the throwout bearing/release bearing. It is a wear & tear part obviously...but its lifespan can be partially determined by your driving habits. Do you find yourself holding the clutch down while waiting for lights to turn green, etc?

Yeah..while I do alot of highway driving, I do spend time in traffic especially stop and go on the freeway.
Any guesses as to what all may need to be replaced? I understand that this is going to be best guess here. Just didn't know if this may include flywheel..pressure plate etc etc or could be limited to the release bearing.

My 2004's done that since day one. At one point on here there were many people who had the same noise with the 04. We have noisy trannys. Nothing to worry about.

..OK I just re-read your post. Mine does it in neutral, not sure about while in reverse. Does it do it in neutral too when you release the clutch?

sounds like the release bearing. there is even a possibility that the damage is within the pressure plate, but the release bearing is the more likely cause. if it's either of those two causes, the transmission will need to be removed for the repair so you should replace the release bearing, clutch disc, and pressure plate. also refinish the flywheel. better off paying for the labor in one shot than waiting until later.

you also might want to check the trans fluid level and see if any of your exhaust piping is loose.

No, mine only does this when the car is cold, in gear and the clutch is being released. Once the car is warmed, the chirping is gone. In neutral, the car makes no noise either.

I am hopeful that this is just a release bearing as this noise only recently started but as you said, the major portion of the cost is going to be the labor even to get to the bearing. Perhaps I will just bite the bullet and do the whole thing.
This, of course, leads to the next question.....What aftermarket parts do you guys recommend instead the stock parts? I know I have seen several diff clutches discussed.
Then again, there are deals to be had on the 06s
Thanks again for the insight.
