As for the Altima, yeah, they're stinkers. We had a 94 and 97. With as bad as our Subaru stinks, I thought for sure the O2 sensors were crapped out, but my datalogger says all is good. It tested fine for Georgia emissions too about 6 months back. It still gets 23mpg in the city and 29mpg on the highway.

All cars do this on a cold start because the air/fuel ratio is very rich prior to the engine warming up. Some cars are worse than others. My wife's 98 Legacy GT is horrible on a cold start. I open the garage and back out immediately to keep the fumes from building in the garage.

If your car had a miss fire and sent raw gas to the cat, it will destroy it in short order (should have been a code thrown). One last thing, does it stink while running after you have been driving for, say, a half hour or so, that gives the cat time to get up to proper temp (should take about 5 to 8 minutes)?
