What is the CVT-M8 for 3k yen more than the 6MT or 5AT?

Re: Skyline Sedan

Correct me if I am wrong... but I think the CVT is a Continuous Variable Transmission, but the 8? I don't know. Perhaps 8 speed automatic.

Re: Skyline Sedan

Probably a Continuously Variable Transmission which acts as 8 manual gears in Manumatic mode.

Re: Skyline Sedan

Of course, the 8 "gears" are just a gimmic. CVT's are faster if you just stick it in D and go.

Re: Skyline Sedan

it is a CVT transmission with 8 factory preset "gears"...
it is the top of the line sedan model in japan....
when u put this transmission in tiptronic mode, u can use two paddles behind the steering wheel, a la 360 F1, to navigate through the eight presets.....

Re: Skyline Sedan

Re: Skyline Sedan

I believe the 276hp is in Japanese measurement, not SAE measurement that we usually use here in the states...
kind of like how Bimmers and Mercs usually have DIN hps instead of SAE hps... for example, the new Bucatti Veyron has 1000 hp according to DIN standard, but "only" 987 hp when using SAE standard....

Re: Skyline Sedan

Don't the Japanese measure power in Ps or PS (whatever that means)? Someone posted the conversion factor was around .98 hp which tends to support lilteyang's comment.

Does anyone know what Ps (PS) means? Or if the conversion factor of .98 or .987 is correct?

Re: Skyline Sedan

DaveO

PS in German is Pferde Stark which means Horse Power translated. Europeans tend to measure horse power the correct way...At the wheels. So there is no exact mathmatical formula between HP at the crank and at the wheels. Let me know if I am wrong. kW is the other measurement used.

1 kiloWatt (kW) = 0.7470 BHP

Here is where I got my numbers from:

Re: Skyline Sedan

Yes, but on a CVT, they're kinda gimmicky. You get the best performance out of a CVT by just sticking it in D and letting it do it's thing. If you put it in manual mode and play with the gears, the engine gets out of it's powerband. The whole advantage of the CVT is the continuously variable gearing.
