Breakin - comparing an abused loaner and my car ..

Drove a G35 loaner sedan for the first time - 5600 miles on the odo - and it was very obviously not broken in properly... I could hear the noise of the valves (do they still have tappets on these things?) and the engine was rougher.

I figure they change the oil etc. on the car pretty regularly.. so I attribute the rough engine to the breakin - or lack thereof. My car with about 11k miles sounded so much sweeter

I don't think they would change the oil that often. Hell, they don't even clean the friggin things.

Re: Breakin - comparing an abused loaner and my ca

That's true they never clean those ****'s!
I abused the hell out of one too, the window "rubber thingy" was hanging out from the back window and the thing was filthy! Car had about 25K on it... I thrashed the sport-shift for more practice. I rarely use it on mine!

See? That does make a difference, I don't care what anyone says! Plus, you have to remember, how many different people have driven the car, that really takes it's toll on a vehicle, no matter who builds it!

Re: Breakin - comparing an abused loaner and my car ..

The loaner I had (5K miles) wasn't very clean inside, but was extremely strong and smooth in the engine department.

Until I see the data, I don't buy-in to any particular break-in practices on modern engines. Nobody can argue longer or louder about proper engine break-in (or even if there is such a thing) than three professional rebuild mechanics (the people you think would know). My brother is one of them none of them believe the same thing.

The "rough" engine and noise could also be related to the cheap gas that goes into it. Premium is only RECOMMENDED FOR BETTER PERFORMANCE. When was the last time you put premium in a loaner??? LOL. I sure as hell didn't when i had a loaner!

Good point, although I did put in Premium into my loaner (I didn't even think about it really), it can be well-argued that some (perhaps many) do not.

I agree that it is hard to attribute the noise to breakin alone - these are abused little puppies. I did put in premium gas. All the same, the noise was more some sort of valve noise than pinging. My experience is that once that sort of noise starts, the engine start sipping oil.

I usually don't put gas in the loaner at all. With what little I actually drive the thing, the needle barely budges.

Re: Breakin - comparing an abused loaner and my car ..

I've had loaners (not Nissan/Infiniti) that needed oil, had the oil filler cap left off, ran very roughly, and generally looked and acted like they'd had the crap kicked out of them.
You can bet most that have to add gas won't put premium in it.(lol may not even put regular in it) .
