Auto shift into 5th
Auto shift into 5th
I have an automatic G35X. Well all G35x are automatic...anyway. When it's cold I can't get the car to shift into 5th gear. Once the car has warmed up it will. Does anybody else have this problem?

Are you talking about in full auto or manumatic mode?
Sounds like something you should alert the dealer to, probably needs to be looked at by service. On my old sedan it would run to higher RPM in 4th, I assumed because the car was trying to warm itself up, but I don't think it completely refused to use 5th gear.

What, there's no overdrive? I was thinking the exact same thing kb9, hehe. It's usually the most simple thing that you overlook, and when someone mentions it, you're like "DOH!".

Re: Auto shift into 5th
This sounds normal for almost any auto trans made today. What it is doing is warming up the trans once it reaches a pre- determined temp it will allow a shift to 5th. It does this to prevent trans damage. Doing this keeps the torque converter unlocked building heat faster. I'm not quite sure of all the reasons but I know that the cold (thick oil) runs at increased pressures and can cause valve body and seal damage unitil it warms up. I live outside of the city and on a cold day it is not uncommon for the trans to shift between 4th and 5th many times when on the hiway. I hope this helps?

I'm inclined to agree with 'Brent'. The tranny will not shift into top gear or even lock up until it reaches a certain temp. I believe this prevents damage in a cold tranny, and also promotes heat buildup.

Re: Auto shift into 5th
Yup - it's normal. Helps the car, transmission, and emissions equipment warm up faster. I think if you go really fast it will eventually lock up, but that's not a good idea with a really cold engine anyway.

That's why I warm my car up, before I even take it out of "Park" position. I think it'll help the engine in the long run.
