Neutral on Red Lights?

Ppl, I've heard alot about auto gear cars, and how shifting to Neutral on every Red light is actually 'bad' for the car...

is this true? and would shifting to neutral on red lights boost my fuel economy?

hell, everyone throw in their 2 cents, i need some opinions here

thanks! =)

I't is something I like to know too, I saw some taxi drivers do this to save gas, I don't know what is theroy behind it, how much difference it can make. I experience myself for some time now, since the rpm remains same @700 rpm with gear in D or N, I really don't think this will save gas. but it may be good for transmission? we need opinions from experts.

It holds no water. You are wasting your energy. We are not driving carburated cars. My Chevelle can benefit from this only slightly due to being carbed. Don't put the wear on the shifter and yourself. Taxi drivers generally try to save any where they can and if they think it works its worth a try...not. As stated the RPMs stay nearly the same or the same so where is the savings? If you are worried the tranny will heat up then that is a different matter.

I believe a lot of people do this so their don't have to keep their foot on the brake pedal... also it doesn't strain the engine and the brake motor with one trying to rotate the wheels while the other holding it tight.....

Yeh, I shift to N at lights and extended stops. I doubt it affects gas/m at all but it helps keep the tranny temp down, and minimize ware and tear. Probably too ****.

How can you be worried about tranny temp where it below zero?

Re: Neutral on Red Lights?

If I am coasting (with a manual trans) knowing that I have a stop ahead (i.e. if there is a stop light), I sometimes take my manual out of gear and coast to a stop. Is this OK? One other note, I sometimes don't use the clutch when I am taking it out of gear. I am not using the throttle either, so I don't think I am hurting my engine or clutch...

Good point, In this D*mned weather nothing warms up. My new thinking is to hell with gas mileage, don't worry about anything, (other than some SOB hitting you or stealing your ride) and have as much fun as you can get away with.
I'm thinking more and more like 'Telegramsam' all the time.LOL: Live for Today dude.
