1200 mile thing
1200 mile thing
Ive got a new 2004 G35 AT...I must have skimmed over the 1200 mile thing and the dealer told me it didnt have a burn in period...so I have been...um...SPEEDING!
Anyways whats the drill? I have about 500-600 miles right now...I mostly just goose it off the line, not going over 80 on the freeways cause I dont feel like going to jail in the first week.
thanks!

Re: 1200 mile thing
Avoid full-throttle and keep it under 4,000rpms. Don't run at a constant speed for a long period of time (no cruise control). It's in the owner's manual. 80mph isn't a problem.

Run the hell out of it and show it who's boss. Seriously, just take it easy for a while to make sure nothings going to fly apart.

Re: 1200 mile thing
I dont believe in that baby it crap. What in the world is going to fly apart in the first 1200 miles vs the next 100K miles???
Engines are built very well today. I have several friends who rebuild motors and then go dyno tune and then go drag race them, they do warm up the motor first.
The key to a successful engine life is allowing the engine to warm up to around 165degrees before full throttle runs. If its 10 outside and you just start your car and you go full throttle good luck on longevity.
I have read that the first 50 miles on a car are the most important and it should be run hard and fast to make sure everything seats in at full pressure. But again warm up is essential.

I always follow what they recommend from the manufacturer, what it reads in the owners manual, be it right or not, since they are the ones warrantying the car, I follow their recomend, it was hard with this car though, as it was with my last car, Mustang GT!

mmm I live in Houston, Tx where its 50-100 degrees most times - how long should I give it to warm up in general?
One of my most fun driving segments is right near my house - I get this nice straight away and all that =)

Re: 1200 mile thing
Regardless of outside temperature, it'll take about 15 minutes for a car to come up to optimum operating temperatures. I used to wait until the temp gauge came up to where it's supposed to be, but I was informed that it measures the water temp.. which comes up much faster than the oil temp.
And for the "run it hard from the start" idea.. that may be fine for the engine, but what about the transmission and other drivetrain components? I think it's those parts that need the easy breakin cycle. Of course, the car's going to make 100k easy, even if you don't break it in. It's getting to 200k that requires care. I don't know about you, but I'll have a different car long before then.
