Lost 3 Qts of Oil over 10K

Stupid me not to check regularly especially when running n20, but I just changed my oil since 16K miles (now 25K) and I only came up with between 2 and 2.5 qt's coming out of the engine. I am using Amsoil synth (which is why I didn't have to change it earlier). When I used Amsoil on my other cars, I never had an issue with consumption. I did a search and found some threads, but found nothing solid. Does anyone know anything about oil consumption on our cars (sedan 6mt). I guess I am going to start check the oil regularly like I should in the first place.

Wow that sounds bad, altho for the mileage you've done, it's probably not out of line by much. Are you sure all 5 quarts went in on the previous change? These dipsticks are hard to read.
Only issue I've heard of on our VQ's is leaking around a valve cover, and a few who may have burned a quart or so between changes.
The majority of issues I'm sure have to do with incorrect reading of the dipstick when refilling.

Re: Lost 3 Qts of Oil over 10K

My VQ consumption was 1/2 qt. every 3000 miles over a 7.5K interval using Mobil 1; this drain was with 22.5K on the odometer.

I just did another oil change yesterday with 29,950 on the odometer, drained out about 4.25 qts. I added 3/4 qt during the interval, so total oil consumption this interval was 1.5 quarts... 1/2 qt every 2500 miles.

The last time I checked the dipstick was 2 weeks ago and the level was fine. I intended to check the dipstick before draining but forgot...

Re: Lost 3 Qts of Oil over 10K

I am the one who did the last oil change and I put in all 5 QT's. I am the one who pulled the oil out today, and only a little over 2 QT came out.

I guess this is typical, has anyone heard a formal position from nissan/infiniti on this? How many other people out there are experiencing this? At this rate, I would love to know where it goes, my plugs are clean, my exhaust isn't black, etc...

Re: Lost 3 Qts of Oil over 10K

Why are you waiting 10K to change the oil? I would never wait that long to change it even if I was using synthetic. 5K is probably the most I'd go on synthetic and 3K is the most I'd do on dino. Not too sure if losing 3 qts in a 10K span is normal but I'm not surprised.

Re: Lost 3 Qts of Oil over 10K

The suggested change interval for Amsoil high performance series 2000 0-30 is 25,000 miles, but to change the filter every 7500. That is why I didn't worry about changing until 10,000. I could have still gone another 15,000 according to their specs. Good thing I didn't or I would have been running dry with no oil. When I pulled the oil out after 10K, it still looked good. Maybe that's why its $9 per quart.

No oil consumtion on mine and I use Amsoil as well. It is probably your NOS with that big of a shot puts stress on your rings and your probably having alot of blowby.

Re: Lost 3 Qts of Oil over 10K

But wouldn't I have oil on the plugs if I had oil blowing by the rings?

My last several cars had nitrous some with larger shots and I never had an oil consumption issue like this or any issues whatsoever for that matter.

Re: Lost 3 Qts of Oil over 10K

I have 19k and use mobil 1 5-30 synthetic. I haven't shown a dipstick reading below the bottom of the acceptable range with 4,000 miles since the oil change.

SixFive.. I've yet to get a reliable reading from the dipstick. If you change your oil yourself, can you measure the volume that drains out and let us know? This topic has really peaked my curiousity.

Re: Lost 3 Qts of Oil over 10K

The dealer just did it so it could be a while. The thing is as inaccurate as it is, if the car has been rested for a while and you get a reading of any kind you aren't low IMO. If you are low then there is not going to be any oil on the stick. Am I over simplifying?

Re: Lost 3 Qts of Oil over 10K

I changed the oil and filter every 3500-4000 miles on my sedan. It consistently burned just over a quart every time. I'm gonna keep track with my coupe as well.
