05 g35x brakes - are dealers suppose to treat as 03-04 pads/rotors? tsb? proof? help

My 05 X has only 20,500 miles on it. A little while ago the VDC and Brake lights came on the dash and shortly after that I heard/felt terrible grinding from the driver front brake. It clearly needs replaced and I'm fully capable as I've done numerous brake jobs over the years.

HOWEVER, I've never had brake pads wear out in under 20K miles. Nor have I ever had pads that didn't have a wear indicator tab on them to let me know it was getting close.

I've seen here and there that the 05 X has the same brakes as the 03-04 sedans and those brakes were considered "bad" by Nissan.

So this morning I took my car to the dealer to have them check it out thinking it would be covered by warranty. They haven't looked yet but the desk guy said it was likely normal wear/tear not covered by warranty. Further it was going to cost $60 just to "inspect" the brakes.

I told him I'd heard about the 05 X having the same brakes as the 03-04 and he disagreed and said they were new.

Anyhoo.. I haven't got the call yet but I'm anticipating this stealership to tell me it isn't covered by warranty.

Anybody with experience in this? Is there documented proof of the 05X having the same brakes as the 03-04 sedans? Is there a TSB or recall for this?

Have any of you had pads wear out in under 20K miles??????

Thanks in advance.

No, brakes are not covered by warranty, that's BMW. What you can do is call infiniti parts department or any other company that deals with our brakes, and they'll explain the fitment. I had a problem as well buying brakes, because I have a late model 05 sedan so my brakes system is actually bigger than the 03-04's and early released 05's, it was a headache finding a perfect aftermarket fit because nobody was aware except for the dealerships. And infiniti's brakes are just plain poor..

I have an 04X, and my front pads were gone right about 20K. I bought the car at 19K, couple thousand miles later I got the brakes replaced under the 3yr/36K brake warranty. I thought mine did have a wear indicator on them though. There is a TSB for the 03/04 brakes, but I cannot comment on the 05X having the same brakes. I suppose you could try to match part numbers... seems like the easiest way to see if they are the same.

Well, the dealer got back with a quote of $1400 for new rotors and pads all the way around. That is just plain comical.

Without any documented insight if the 05 X is to be treated like the 03-04 sedan then I couldn't really say anything other then "no thanks, I'll take care of it for less then $200".

I dunno guys... I've always done the maintenance on my cars for the last 17 years. Plenty of brake jobs on cars I've driven much more aggresively. Never seen a pad wear out in under 20,000 miles. Never seen a pad not have some type of wear indicator thus trashing my rotors.

I know all dealerships are the same and Nissan/Ininiti will still be my brand of choice, but today I lost a little respect for Nissan.

Thanks to those who chimed in.

Which do you want? Service life or performance? Nissan has gone with the latter to be taken seriously in the sports coupe/sedan market place. Braking from 60mph in 110' or less requires performance pads and expensive grippy tires, both of which wear out quickly. Performance pads tend to munch rotors too. BMWs suffer the same fate too. Expect to replace pads and rotors every 20-30K. If you're a DIY guy and have the most basic of tools, you can do the front pads and rotors in about 1 hour and for around $200-250.

It's still crap that they wear out so fast. They used too small of a rotor so they had to go with a very high performance pad which wears out fast and eats the rotor.

I think if the 05X does have the same brakes as the 03/04 it should be covered under the 3/36 free brake replacement. I would fight it with Infiniti (not the dealer).

Not true, Infiniti did give a free brake replacement warranty for the 03/04 sedans for 3 year 36k miles which includes rotors, pads and labor.

Don't feel too bad...I have the same model as you and my pads were gone around 13k!!! It seemed like I was driving with one foot on the brakes and one on the gas or something.

Do yourself a favor and buy aftermarket pads. I highly recommend Endless Vito Nuova. They are super grippy, no squeal, less dust, and last longer (compared to OEM and Hawk HPS).

If you are interested, here are the part numbers:
Fronts - EP236VN ($94.05)
Rears - EP389VN ($94.05)

I ordered my pads from www.mynismo.com. The contact of the person I bought it from is below. I actually bought two sets and he gave me a 10% discount.

It's my understanding that the coupe's equiped with the 13" Brembos eat through their rotors nearly as quickly. That's DAMN expensive too seeing that the OEM rotors are $400-500ea plus two set of pads per caliper.

You're right too, the X is equipped with the 03/04 brakes.

This has been discussed before but Infiniti does NOT warranty the brakes on the 05X even though they are the same as the 03/04's. I got almost 50K miles from my original brakes (probably drive like an old man) and replaced them with pads and rotors from Burtman industries. Their pads were from Akebono. Ceramics, light dust, better performance and $660 for pads and rotors all around. There are other great aftermarket alternatives as well.

You'r right, but this isn't the situation, the guy has brake problems with his 05 AWD, his Infiniti does not have warranty on the brakes...
