Could an 03-04 G35 sedan beat a 97-03 Grand Prix GTP?

Just was curious if anyone has raced one.

1/4 mile times are close but the G35 should be be pretty far ahead in all other aspects besides maybe rolling acceleration. The Grandprix is big and somewhat sloppy on the road

Q50 Red Sport 400 RWD
the question is, how many 97-03 grand prix gtps are out there in the proper running order/maintenance to not fall apart after one major high-rpm race? Everyone I see on the road is falling apart and on the 7th owner.

I've owned two 97-03 Grand Prix ( one GT and one GTP ) and I loved them to death. While they were sloppy in the handling department ( though the ultra cheap GMPP police interceptor suspension upgrade solved that ) and couldn't brake for isht ( again, police interceptor package would solve it )...they were very fun to drive when modded.

I ran the exact same 1/4 mile time in my GTP stock as my G35 when it was stock. Modded though it's another story. With the same money spent on the G35 ( about $500-$600 for the moment ) my GTP ran a 13.4@102mph while the G35 ran 14.3@98mph. I later turboed the GTP and ran 12.6@111mph on regular street tires with no weight reduction and still on stock EVERYTHING ( just removed the S/C and added the turbo with proper fueling...The engine, tranny..even the exhaust was stock. ).

In the end...there are Grand Prix in the 8's while G35's are still in the 11's.

I own a G35 though because it really makes a better daily driver and it simply looks better.

I agree. I've seen plenty of fast GTP's at the track. More 12 second and faster cars than G35's.

Under $1000 in mods and you are deep in the 13's.

And don't use the "who care's if it's faster i would never drive a crappy car like that" line....save that for the BMW guys.

I run with two guns with the same car. One is a 2002? GTP the other is a 1999 Regal

Their cars run 100% identical and they just have intakes and a minor exhaust mod.

Last time I ran was when I first got the car and wasn't use to launching it and had zero mods on it and I was still pretty close to them. They will have you off the line because the Supercharger gets the power to the wheels quick but with a good launch you should be even and start to pull on them around 50 kms/h

I'm going to take my car out for a spin with those two once I get my plenum spacer in there. I should be raping them after that. I'm also on some new wheels which I find are a lot more grippy and don't spin what so ever, also a little lighter than my stock 17s.

Answer to your question, yes you should have them beat. Just make sure VDC is off

GTPs run about the same times in the 1/4 as a G35, mid to high 14s. However the G35 will trap several mph higher. My buddy is in love with these cars, he has had two GTPs, stock he ran a 14.8@92MPH. GTPs respond to mods alot better than a G35, mainly becuase they are FI stock. With a 3.5" pulley, custom tune, intake, headers, and a downpipe, my buddy ran a 13.5@102. GTPs have gobs of low-end torque since they are S/C'ed but from a roll a G should win stock for stock. Its too bad they are wrong wheel drive since they have a potential drivetrain. Its just way too much to ask from a FWD 3700lb car.

The torque steer on them is like a small boat with a 300hp engine. Sucks.

Honestly, I don't even respect domestic vehicles anymore. It's sad because I use to be a Cadillac/GM purist But I don't think I'll ever leave the Nissan family, I'll always own at least one.

Torque steer really wasn't that bad imo...it was THERE but it was very managable even with nearly 400lb-ft of torque to the wheels.

I have to kinda agree with you on domestics though. I have severe love for a few GM's ( mainly Corvette's, Grand Prix's and G8's ) but for the most part they really do kinda suck. I mean, for example...I'd buy a G8 in a heart beat but that's about the only pontiac that I care for at this moment.

I've thought a few times about leaving the G35 stock and buying a Grand Prix just to race it since it is so much cheaper to make fast than the G35 is...but then I figure that a fast G35 is sadly more RARE than a fast GP so....

And with Pontiac getting canned, even the G8 is out.

Now the only GM car that can attract me is the CTS-V and the STS-V AKA Corvettes. haha

Same with Chrysler, I like the SRT-8s but that's just because I appreciate powerful V8s in a world over run by powerful 6 cylinders. I'm an SRT-4 hater though.

To sum up what I am saying is I am sticking with the G till the wheels fall off, then I am buying another G or Z but if I get the job I same supposed to come fall (subaru dealer) my DD will be a WRX and I'll keep a Z for weekends.

I've never been a fan of domestics but for once I thought the G8 was a great car. It was a good replacement for the Grand Prix. The GP GXP looked good, but FWD and V8 should never be used in the same sentence let alone be used as a respectable drivetrain in what's supposed to be a "sports sedan".

It seems like whenever GM gets something right they stop doing it or go the other way.
