It's the pre-actuater located in the left lateral quadrent of the osmosimeister in the tranny. Without your great description I would have never pin pointed it.

Use SEARCH!!!!!!

Does this happen when you put it in 3rd in 'manual' mode? Is the noise during the upshift or downshift? Try going through some basic fixes like replacing the transmission fluid, tune-up, timing belt etc. as these are basic maintenance procedures anyway. All else fails, go to the dealer and get a diagnostic and hope you dont get cheated.

Yes, they got rid of the osmosimeister after 2003.

Replace the tranny fluid, but don't bother with the timing belt, the G35 doesn't have one (it's got a chain). If your car has less than 70K on it, there's a chance it's still under the 6 year, 70K power train warranty. If you've got a carfax report for your car, it will tell you it's in-service date (date it was first titled to a new owner). If it was less than 6 years ago, drive immediately over to a dealer and have them fix it.

leave it in auto mode for a few days and see if it stops doing the clunk into 3rd gear, if it does, its just because you suck at using the manual mode.. Mine did that in the Auto mode at first when I got the car, but I think it was because i was really hard on it in the manual mode and the tranny learns from your driving style..it took some getting used to and now is perfectly smooth in Auto, it does clunk sometimes in the EDIT:MANUAL mode..

It seems most clunk going 2nd-> 3rd in the manual mode from what i've read..The auto mode should be smooth tho.

edit: I never have felt a grind though.. so maybe this isnt what your even talking about..

Hmm...mind does that. If i use manual mode (the rare times when i do) and shift to 3rd it sometimes shifts in fast and hard.

Never does it in auto though...just manual 2-3 shift.

Is that an issue i need to worry about?

Sell it and get a 6MT...

...seriously, I would start with trans fluid replacement, but beware that depending on mileage and how bad the problem is replaceing the fluid might make it worse. This is of course the worst case scenario.

I did a search, seems it a common "problem"

https://g35driver.com/forums/tech-v3...-update-2.html

It's done it ever since i bought the car at 23K miles. I have 35K now. I never use manual mode anyway, it seems pointless to me. In D it shifts like butter. But i was planning on changing fluid anyway.
