Re: VIDEO - Drag Racing from LACR

Nice video! What's the track elevation? It looks like the coupes were running in the 15 sec zone?
THX723, you have of the best looking sedan I have seen, very nice!

Re: VIDEO - Drag Racing from LACR

Ohhh right ... I did forget to mention the conditions at LACR didn't I?

Among other factors, the elevation of the track is 3000ft+. The correction factor for altitude is 3%. However, I've long suspected the 3% is not enough to compensate for the other factors at LACR, as I've gotten far better times at other tracks and closer to sea level. So, Gurgen and I did some G-tech experiements at LACR. The numbers it provided were virtually dead-on with the time slips given, thus validating the G-tech as a good measuring device. This sucker was surprisingly accurate right down to the 60' time, all other interval times, ET, and even trap speed! Needless to say, I'm now a huge fan of the G-Tech Competition Pro, provided it is properly calibrated and operated on a completely FLAT surface. I'm not however as confident with the 1st generation G-tech (non Compeition Pro version).

We also performed some experiments closer to sea level. I managed high 13.9x, while Gurgen pulled 13.0x w. his TT. From the two experiments, we've deducted it is within reason to take away 1 full second from the LACR times (or 0.8s if you choose to be very conservative).

Having said that, I've made the following observations from the many times we've gone to LACR.

Average standing 1/4-mile time:
stock AT sedan: ~15.6
stock 6mt sedan: ~15.3
stock AT coupe: ~15.1
stock 6mt coupe: ~15.0
Subtract 1s from the above times provide fairly realistic outcomes that's close to published numbers.

The night the video was shot, I established my personal best at LACR (after the addition of the Intake Plenum) at 14.8x or about 0.1 second faster than my pre-plenum times. Estimated 13.8x normalized time ... I was elated. Gurgen, on the other hand, pulled a 13.9x (LACR time) ... which figured to 12.9s when normalized. That is wonderful ... could only imagine his time once he's ready to up the boost from 4.3psi!!!

Oh and thanks for the ride compliments

Re: VIDEO - Drag Racing from LACR

Thanks iLLG35.

Gurgen was carrying Randy at the time and we suspected Randy lied about his weight ... he's probably closer to the neighborhood of 500lbs. LMAO!!!

No really ... I think Gurgen's car was getting bad heat soak by that point on top of a not so great launch.

Re: VIDEO - Drag Racing from LACR

Oh really? Damm, ive been hearing alot about the heat soak and everything lately with turbo's and it makes me wonder if i could ever get a turbo now because of all the driving I do. I dont mean to turn this thread into a turbo or FI thread, but could you tell me what could happen by over running the turbo's and getting heat soak could do? Blow the engine? I guess i'll just have to talk to gurgen about that. Nice runs though again lol.

Re: VIDEO - Drag Racing from LACR

One thing Clint failed to mention is that LACR is a poorly kept track and holds drag nights every Wed and Fri. The launch area is terrible and that doesn't help with times. The fastest I ran (on video, Clint) was 14.8x there.

Re: VIDEO - Drag Racing from LACR

iLL,

Don't discount the ambient heat, as Randy said. The heat soak is not a safety factor, I suspect that it is only marginally hotter in the engine compartment when the car is in motion, but when you stop and idle, you definitely feel the heat radiate away from turbos/manifolds. So, yes the car was heat soaked, just like any other car (of course, more so), but according to my testing with an ECU scanner, even during a heat soaked condition, the car's intake charge is about ~106-112 degrees while in motion, and goes up to ~130 if you sit there and ide for a while; these numbers are actually better (at least as good) as pop-charger numbers, i'm told. The coolant temps are also very much in check (195-210). So it was the ambient heat that was more responsible for my performance. I'll tell you, the car felt A WHOLE LOT slower there than it does in normal, 70degree temps, which validates the G-tech results at sea level.

The lowest the temps got to was about 83-85degF, at which point the car ran much better, but I could not get traction at all. Remember that I am on 235 street tires...thus could not do a full power-brake. If I had an MT and could drive as well as Clint can, I think 13.7's on that were day are absolutely possible. Also, we're not no-kidding about the correction factor (0.8-1 is dead on). Before we got there, Clint predicted that I will run low 14's and maybe get into 13's. I was less optimistic, but alas he was dead on.

Re: VIDEO - Drag Racing from LACR

I was surprised that Randy's 170lbs made such a big difference. My runs averaged 14.1, and even if you take my worst run of 14.25x (in that temp range), the increase in the ET to 14.587 is VERY significant and much more than the predicted '0.1 for every 100lbs' estimate.

This leads me to belief that i can have significantly better times with a less than full tank that i had (I know, stupid!) and without a spare (yeah that's kind of cheating, but just a thought)....

One thing I do want to say, we had LLLLLLOOOOOOAAAAADDDDDDSSSSSS of fun that day, it was great.

Re: VIDEO - Drag Racing from LACR

Clint,

I think that with an ECU upgrade and the upcoming power mods, you will get into 14.5's (with the race tires)!
