Is it possible for a tire to be balanced with no added metal weights?

Hi all,

I had 4 new Eagle GT's put in a month ago. Wasn't paying too much attention at that moment but there might of been a slight vibration at 80mph but I heard the tires can get flat spots (I only drive during weekends) so thought it may be normal.

Then I had the rear pads replaced (didn't resurface) rotors. Rotors looked fine. Now when I go near 80mph the wheel shakes a bit. Rear pads shouldn't have anything to do with it right? If not then it has to be the new tires.

I noticed on day 1 when they put the new tires on that there were "small metal weights" on all 3 tires except 1. 1 had some glue on but there wasn't metal weights on it. I am wondering if the guy actually forgot or maybe the tire is perfectly balance without weights??? Is that possible?

Thanks...

if the stars align and the tech knows what he is doing, yes. they can rotate the tire on the wheel to "self balance" the combo.

yes it is 100% reasonable to mount a tire on a rim and require no wheel weight.

There is a soft spot on the tire and a the wheel. If you can get near each other you might not need a weight pending the rim is not damaged at all.

most rims however require least .25 on one side bare rim, but that is still considered decent.

the glue you see is the old one being removed

my shop has a road force balancer and it will actually tell you the run out on the rim and tire so you can reposition the tire to require less weight.

and usually the tire manufacturer will mark the spots with a yellow dot so you can match it with the valve stem. i balance tires all the tire that require no weight. my old rims took a total of 0.25 oz for all 4!!

Also possible if the mounter used stick on weights that he didn't clean the wheel well enough when he applied it and one flew off.

Tires need months of sitting to get flat spots. My project car goes 1-2 months sometimes without driving without an issue at all.

It's possible if the tire/wheel are pretty close to cancelling each other out. But I'd say it's pretty rare for that happening. Just get that wheel rebalanced and see if that fixes it.

I had slight vibration after replacing tires up front. One day I was washing my car and realized that the weight had fallen off the driver tire. The glue was still there where the weight was suppose to be. I went to Discount Tire that day, they rebalanced and put the weight on. No vibration since...

Guys...thanks for all the feedback. I'll probably just bring it back to the same shop and ask them about the missing "weights" and shaky steering wheel.

I also didn't get alignment after the new tires so hopefully that's not what's causing it as well.

I bought used wheels (ebay) and new tires (discounttiredirect) for one of my old cars a few years back. Took it to a local shop to have them mounted/balanced. The guy gave me a lot of crap about buying "fancy" aluminum wheels esp used, and told me they were probably bent and crap balance, not to buy tires online, blah blah blah. When the got them mounted and went to balance them 2 needed the smallest weights they had, 1 needed the 2nd to the smallest, and 1 balanced with no weights at all. The guy ate his words pretty quick

So I took it back to the same shop. The front passenger which didn't have weights actually turned out to have a small weight on the INSIDE part of the tire. Anyway, that tire balanced perfectly. So the guy suggested why not check the other front tire and that one turned out to be .25 off and he said that's really not much at all. Then he took out the rears as well. One of the rear is balanced and the other is .50 off. So basically a front/rear is balanced and another front/rear is off. So he ended up rebalancing everything and I was watching him do it. The machine finally said 00 / 00 on both sides for all 4 tires.

They didn't charge me anything. The shop was nice. Took it out to highway to 80mph and it didn't shook so hopefully it's fixed for good.

Thank you all.

Logic at work, something isn't right you take it back and get it done correctly. Wheel/tire balance machines are soooo much better today than they were a few years ago, we're lucky I used to watch my Dad and his DIY method.... That was even prior to the bubble balance machines.
