Yes, power starts to plateau and starts to slowly fall off around 6200rpms; however, the motor still making 90% of it's power at the 6600rpm fuel cut. Ideal shift points take into consideration the size and shape of power band and available torque multiplication. Long story short, all shifts at redline for the VQ35DE for optimal acceleration.

^^ that's just my opinion. but to answer your question, no you won't put any excessive wear on the tranny by driving in tip mode unless you're shifting in the wrong rev range, which in that case has nothing to do with hardware and it's just driver error.
I use it all the time and prefer it over full auto. Yes when you downshift it's quicker to just have it in auto and just mash the accelerator. But say if you're waiting to pass a car on the freeway and slowly passing, then putting it in a lower gear you can just take off quicker.

Also, when driving at slow speeds I hate on how the auto takes forever to shift. I use manumatic to shift early, like 2k or so rather than 3k.

WHen it's play time; its always manualmode, especially after the boltons...
I can shift at 6800-6900, and its shifted by 71-7200. without loosing anypower. And shifts so hard that my front pillars make cracking noise, and interior sounds like a warzone =X.

another reason why my next car will be 535i =X

^^Tested and it will redline.

OP - read the wikipedia article about how automatic transmissions work (very different from manual). It might calm some of your fears (it did mine anyway). I drive in MM pretty much all the time unless I'm talking to my passenger a lot.

^I do this too. If I'm behind a slow moving car and waiting to pass, I'll go ahead and bump it down to third so I have power the instant I hit the gas

Honestly I'm really kinda swayed to check out a Transgo VB upgrade...you don't see grounding kits chirp 1-2 and 2-3...an automatic chirping...I've never seen that until I saw what VB upgrades can do.
Transgo Valve Body.. Whatis that.. And what can i gain from changing/upgrading it? Newb question i know

You can gain yourself a lot less of a headache by using the search button. Funny, this same response answers 90% of newb questions...

Check out the reviews and PM me if you are interested.

I don't have his kit, but I can vouch for his results. I do have a kit that includes a 5AT cable, and it definitely improved the shifting. In fact, several things on the car improved with a full grounding kit (the starter is now on steroids). It's a great, cost-effective upgrade to an automatic.

The 5AT transmission are the same on all the g35's but the shifting ability is different? Is this a true statement according to posts? Can you upgrade an 03 shifting chip or something to 04.5? holy crap. And if i did would i be able to go through all the gears? Has anybody looked into this?

IIRC, the computer that controls the transmission completely changed in 04.5 went from external to internal or some such. I'm sure Dave or somebody who knows more about it will chime in. Anyway, point is, you can't get the newer shift logic on the older transmission. And there isn't any tuning options for the transmission either... pity too
