What a difference quality fluids make

Went to my friends shop since buying my car to do a full 30k and get stuff I approved of in my car. We used motul since his shop uses it and it's good stuff. I kept complaining about how notchy my transmission felt and i did a ton of research and realize that a i wanted something synthetic but that had some weight to it to give the gears cushion so we did a little mix of 75x90 and 90PA (mostly 75x90) just so that it would thicken it a little and it feels fantastic. I dunno what was in there before but it came out super thin and golden like thin as water. Used the same mix in my Rear Diff oil change, oddly when we emptied that out it came out black so good thing I did that. Put some nice Synthetic 5w30 in the engine and I must say it made one hell of a difference. Switching gears doesn't feel notchy at all anymore and the car just feels smoother all around.

was it an auto trans of manual?

auto trans fluid is really light

manual is usually gear fluid, which is thick. Like a 75 weight or so.

I mean im not sure what was in there before...the dude got service done at infiniti dealerships per the records from the dealership and the auto shop that did work for the dealership I bought it from said they didnt touch the tranny fluid so who knows what was in there before.

I have a 6 speed manual 06 sedan (should of mentioned it) but either way its a hell of a difference.

I was gonna say maybe they put auto trans fluid (light weight) instead of the manual (thicker) fluid at the dealer?

possibly, i mean it looked thin. Didn't look like the other Auto fluid that my friend had in his shop but either way im just glad to have stuff that I know and approve of running in my car. Really makes a difference and made sense to do at 30k anyhow since I had just bought the car. Now as soon as I can use up these cheap *** brake pads they put on my car ill be good to go

There are plenty of manual trans cars that use ATF as lube to pass through tighter bearing differences. The mistake gets made more often than you think. I have drained gear oil out of some that require ATF in which shifting wasnnotchy and the bearings were failing due to the fluid.

I am sure the mistake has been made the other way as well

either way I'd have to assume this was serviced at a dealership when this fluid was done, as such thats pretty pathetic

regardless it feels 1000x better now. I would get so jealous driving my friends ****ing acura tsx or bmw 3 series because their trannys were like butter and mine felt like **** but now it feels like im not 'lucky' when i dont have a rough shift

ya my friend had some automatic left in a tube for the tranny fluid swap and it was a dark purple color and he even joked about it not being a big deal if a little got in because it had detergents so it didn't look thin and golden at all but I wasnt sure so no need to comment on the norm.

Either way whatever it was it was far too thin

ATF is always red. Golden Brown is just regular MTF...

Nissan recommends SAE 75W-85 or 75W-90... @ 3.25 qts.

^Yep! The T-56 in my TA called for ATF. Also my friends Ford f-150 (with a Mazda 5 speed BTW )
I think his Z31 might call for ATF as well, not really sure on that though.
