Catalytic Converter Heat Shield Replaceable?

Hi Guys,

Do you know if I can buy just the heat shields on their own? Mine have rusted quite a bit and now make a raspy sound when the rpm is dropping (in a very small rpm range); it sounds like 2 parts that are loose vibrating and as they slow down you hear it. It's annoying the heck out of me but at least I know it's nothing serious.

If the above isn't an option, I might try to repair them (bought this kit for fixing exhausts, mufflers, etc. If that doesn't work, then they (shields) are probably going to have to come off.

Also, what about the "Emission Control System Warranty". I'm assuming something like rusty heat shields wouldn't be covered but checking just in case anyone has tried going that route?

Thanks in advance!

My driver's side one started doing that a couple weeks ago too..

I talked to my muffler place and the dude said he can see if it can be welded, otherwise, they just take them off and thats the end of it..

Since they dont control anything with emissions, I doubt they are covered, but who knows.

I'd replace it if possible. A couple years ago, I took my GTI to Florida for a VW show and I'd removed my cat heatshield because I scraped it everywhere. I parked in some dry grass at the car show and within 5 minutes, the underside of my car started smoking.

Heat from the cat was setting the dry grass on fire.

Yeah, I prefer to leave mine on. I actually do park in a grass field once in awhile; and besides, I think they kind of protect the catalystic converter.

I found this online which might end up working for me: http://www.ehow.com/how_5160145_fix-...ld-rattle.html It's not a permanent fix but would definetly prolong the current sheilds' life.

Everything underneath my car is rust free except a few parts related to the exhaust... bummer!

lol

I did do a fix just like that to the y pipe heatshield using one of those clamps last summer.. surprisingly it is still attached under there. But for the cat shield it would take one freakin huge clamp

Just as an update, I ended up using a hose clamp to fix this (for however long it will last). For the first converter I used one large clamp, for the 2nd I combined 2 smaller ones. My dad had old ones lying around and it took me awhile to find the right size/combination. He said he got them at a truck stop, but maybe the longer ones are available in regular stores too.

So good not hearing that noise now! It drove me nuts, felt like I was driving a beater.

And btw, I peaked under our Toyota and it never had a heat shield from the factory; once mine fail beyond repair, they are coming off.

i was able to open the shield enough to remove a piece of heat shield that sits between the shield you can see, and the exhaust pipe. Thats all that was actually rattling on mine even though the whole thing is kinda loose. I may do the hose clamps if it rattles again

I have this same issue when I accelerate beside a meridian I can hear a heatsheild rattle and was not able to locate where it was comming from, It happens from 1200-1500 or so rpm and only under load, it annoys the hell out of me.

yeah exactly what mine was doing.. you need to use a crobar to bend the heatshield down some and then you can reach in there a little bit and pull out the loose piece. Or just use a clamp, i'm sure that would work too..

I've been wondering that sounds was for the longest time. I took it to the dealer and they told me my heat shields were rusted. The only fix is to cut the heat shields off. It was going to take them 1 hour at a rate of $120/hr. I said to leave it alone since it doesnt damage the exhaust. Looks like I'll either cut it off or use the hose clamp method. Beats paying the dealer $120 to do it.
