Buying a 05-06 G35, yay or nay ?
Hello, my first post here and im looking for some advice and opinions. Im gonna be getting rid of my 03 Altima 3.5 SE 5mt and am looking at a 05-06 G35 Sedan 6mt as a replacement. My altima has been one of the most maintenence free cars I have ever owned, I figured it would only be better with a Infiniti right? Ive been doing some reading around here to see about common problems, a few have me concerned, like the oil consumption and the multiple code / VDC/wont rev over 3000 rpm cam pos. sensor fail that still isnt right after replacing the sensor.
Is there any other common problems I am missing? Are these cars really issue prone? How has your experience been so far? If I buy one is a extended warranty a must? Would you all reccommend buying one?
Id appreciate any input, thanks

First things first, welcome to the site!
The 05 and 06 sedans only have oil consumption problems with the REV-UP engines, and you only get those with a manual tranny. An X or auto will not have the rev-up engine.
Things are not better with the Infinti badge; in fact, they are just about the same as a regular Nissan.
I recommend getting one, but do your homework on these cars.
1. Find one with the lowest mileage you can afford.
2. Drive a couple of sedans. I drove 6 of them before I made my pick.
3. Check service history of the car. If you go private owner, see if he/she knows the car pretty well.
4. If you decide to get one that's close to 55,000 miles, go ahead and do the 60,000 service. A quick search on here will let you know what's all involved. You can pay a dealer or a mechanic to perform the maintenance, but it's all very straight forward and easy to do if you're mechanically inclined.
I'm pretty picky about my cars. It took me 9 months to find the G that I was willing to buy. All I have had to do is basic maintenance and I had to replace a cam pos sensor. Most of the cases where replacing the sensor hasn't fixed the problem is due to either a bad installation, a bad part, or busted connections to the sensor.
All in all, a little time and common sense will net you a great daily driver that is fun, practical, and can be enhanced easily with a 350Z product catalog. Not all items will fit, but most of the suspension is a direct carryover.

Almost forgot...
I've never bought an extended warranty. If you can find a car that's been treated right and you stay on top of the maintenance, it's very rare that you'll need the warranty at all. I skipped the warranty because the nearest dealership is 25 miles away and they don't do great work anyways. Also, I bought the car in Chicago and I live in Cincinnati and didn't want to jump through hoops in trying to transfer it another dealership. It's simply not worth it to me.

Welcome to the club! First of all, I'd say find an 06 one if possible, even better if it's still under factory warranty. Also look into the compression rod issue, and bad synchos for 6mt gear box. If you find one, test drive and get the VIN, call Infiniti dealership to find out if any service / warranty work / TSBs have been done to the car. Just need a little patience cuz not that many 6mt G sedans out there.
I have an 05 and love it. It currently has 105k miles on it and the mostly costly prob i've had so far is bad throttle body sensor which i had to replace the whole thing and ac clutch / compressor.
Other than that I think the car has a nice blend of power and luxury.

I wouldn't touch a used 05/06 6MT with a 10-foot pole unless it has ALL documentation of oil changes at Nissan or Infiniti. If you don't have this, Nissan will not replace the short block when it eventually fails.
Thanks for the input so far
Thats one thing I was wondering though with the oil consumption issue, is the only way they replace the block under factory warranty? If thats the case 05 and 06 under 70K miles would be eligable right?

My issues so far (got the car in January)
1) Lots of rattles, especially when the weather is warm
2) Engine burning oil (will be replaced under warranty soon)
3) The paint is very soft and therefore difficult for detailers to work with. I also don't think the clear coat is very high quality, but that could just be from the last owner not maintaining the finish properly.
4) Very few body mods. There are several (though not many) mods for the 03-04, but very few for the 05-06.
5) Compression rod bushing are on their way out. To be replaced under warranty.
I would suggest getting an 06 still under bumper to bumper warranty just in case.
I am glad I got a G under warranty because I can fix any TSB issues the original owner neglected or didn't notice. Once out of warranty, only recall fixes are free, not TSB's. My warranty only will last about 9 months, but I am definitely getting my money's worth. Also, some dealers are pretty cool regarding warranty work and mods. For instance, Beshoff Infiniti in San Jose is super cool about it.
