Have someone rev your engine while you look around under the hood.

It could also be radio noise from the alternator? Does itmhappen if you turn the radio off?

It a happens when the radio is on too. More audible when its turned off. Its sounds more like a wind breeze/tornado kind.

Didn't notice the RPM, thoguh am sure, the RPM is between 1.5 - 2k.

I checked yesterday if its happening on load or neutral after nazco posted, and believ, its happening under load. may be thats the reason the tech at local service centre didn't find anything.

My AC compressor whines like heck. Pretty easy to nail that one down, though - just turn the AC button on and off. Once I get above about 40mph it's hard to hear over everything else.

Sounds pretty normal to me. You have a mechanical fan and when it's engaged, usually at a stop or slower speeds (sub 25mph) in hot weather, it makes a loud, roaring or "wind breeze" kind of sound. At higher speeds, the fan clutch isn't engaged and the sound goes away. The sound is more prevalent in hot conditions.

I took it to couple of local service centres and they couldn't find anything.

Frustrated when frns ask me about this sound
whining? Get your wife out of the engine bay.

I had this same issue. Whining noise between 1st and 3rd gear speeds I have a 2003.5 sedan with an auto tranny. I described the sound to one mechanic, he said not to worry. I had another mechanic do a ride along and he said thingss sounded normal.

Fast forward one week, I'm driving along and hear a "crack" sound and the battery and engine light go on in the dash. My power steering goes out. I pull over safely, and the car begins spilling coolant everywhere.

The mechanical fan fell off the engine and is sitting in the bottom of the engine compartment. I think the fan clutch unit was bad. I don't have an estimate yet but it's very disappointing. Just an FYI and a warning for others who have this sound.

Is it after your car has been sitting in the cold for awhile? Pretty sure this is a common issue on the G's and there is a thread about it. Sounds almost as if there is an air leak in the cabin, I have this issue and it goes away as the car warms up. From my research looks to be an issue related to the tranny or clutch.

Same thing has been happening to me. The whining is a high pitched whine but its too quiet to be caught on camera. I didn't really think anything of it, it's just kind of annoying. It isn't the fan or AC...but it winds up every time the engine revs up as well. Has anyone found a solution or answer to this problem???

I am experiencing a similar issue. I just noticed it since I am now driving through my parking garage with my windows down instead of up.

I figure it's the dreaded timing chain tensioner thing that the VQ35 is famous for.

Time to trade this thing in. With the issues I had have with this car, I will never buy another Nissan again.

Rear wheel drive fully loaded
Whining noise

I having the same whining problem in my 06 M35. About 2 weeks ago I started hearing what sounds like I have gear drive in the car. Happens when started . Without a load it's not so audible but at low rpms in first gear at take off it's pretty loud.
Has anyone figured this one out yet?

Slipping or worn belt or tensioners?
Probably time to replace on a fifteen year old vehicle?

Make a video, post to youtube, put the link here.

It's impossible for us to guess what this mystery whining sound is. Gotta be able to hear it.
