I actually enjoyed the MM 5AT on the Dragon's Tail.
Only thing is, I wished it would have had the rev-matching like the 04.5+ models :/

My 94 TA was an auto, but at least it had V8 grunt like crazy. Then the 2000 6MT WS-6 was waaaaayy more fun to drive.

I can tell you one thing though. The 5AT in the G absolutely PWNS the stupid 4L60e 4AT in the f-body platform. Granted, it's no 6MT, but the Nissan auto is leaps and bounds ahead of the old GM slushbox.
you have never driven an fbody with a stalled 4l60e have you? I was running an 8.0 1/8th mile with bolt ons, gears, and a 3000stall torque converter. that 4l60e is a badass transmission.

I really enjoyed the rev matching in my 05 auto... actually performed very well.

a 4l60e? break? maybe if abused badly or you put more horsepower than it's rated for to it. you can build a 4l60e for 1000hp for 1600 dollars though. kinda hard to argue with that affordability on a performance transmission. My 4l60e stood up to a serious beating while I was driving the car. my head gasket ended up going on the car and I started pulling it apart. The head gasket went when I started messing with nitrous on a high mileage motor. it already had 140k miles on it when I did that. probably wasn't the best idea on my part looking back.

4L60e in Mom's suburban (not abused) broke.
4L60e in Mom's other suburban (not abused either) broke.
4L60e in my Trans-Am (abused a little, but not badly) broke.
4L60e in 97 work truck (gutless 305, but heavy loads) broke before 100k
700r4 (similar transmission) in my cousins Truck with a TBI (not much power there) broke... twice.
4L60e in my Grandmothers V6 Firebird (let's be honest, almost no power. AND it's NEVER abused at all) broke

We did have a 97 1500 with the original 4L60e and over 200k... but it's the only vehicle I've seen make it that long.

I think those trannys are hit and miss. The one in our 2000 Silverado crapped out at 120k, but my friends 2002 Suburban has the original trans in it at over 230k.

have no clue why your family has problems with them. I had 2 camaros with 4l60e's both were perfect.
9 of the company work trucks have 4l60e's with 5.3l ls base v8's and never had a single one die aside from the one that had a transmission line break and the person kept driving the truck until the trans gave out on the side of i75.
I have also had 2 700r4's one had a shift kit the other not. the one without did break, but it had a 390hp 400cid pontiac in front of it. the one with the shift kit is still running. that's literally all it took to make it work fine in that car.
I have had extremely good experiences with the 4l60e. there are reason people build them instead of swapping 6l80e/6l85e's into their cars.

I'm not saying a built 4L60e doesn't have potential... but from personal experience, they're pretty hit-mis in stock form.
