I have an ACT clutch and its pretty bad

I bought the G35 last July which came with the aftermarket ACT Clutch and a lightweight flywheel. It took a long time before I could really drive this thing but its still pretty difficult. I still stall every so often. The hardest is when I have to go up an incline sometimes when Im balancing to go up there is an awful noise that sounds like some whining/grinding noise before I get it going and its really hard to get it going easily. Usually I'd have to rev up to like 2k just to keep it from stalling. The clutch is a pain to drive with also cause its just way too stiff, I dont mind stiff but this is a little much for a non-turbo set up. My question is:

1. Does anyone have an ACT clutch that has similar characteristics?
2. Has anyone experienced this with JWT's clutch (Im thinking of switching to that)?

How is your clutch fluid? How many miles on the clutch?

I personally have a JWT setup but know many with the ACT combo you have and they arent having any problems with them. The ACT clutch/flywheel is a very good combo.

I hate to have to ask this, but it is a factor...do you have experience driving a manual car?

Clutch fluid is clean. Miles, well, about 30K, so its fresh. Its a really high load clutch. Yes, I've been driving manual for over 15yrs. This clutch has a really high torque cap, which makes for really great shifting, but its just a pain when Im going up inclines (like say a parking structure) from dead stop. Usually, I can balance it at very low RPMS with a honda and accelerate slowly under 1000 RPM. but the clutch gap from engaged to a stall when under 1000 RPM is so narrow. Its manageable but going from moving - to stop - to go is a little slow. Its hard to take off quickly and smoothly with ease. Im thinking of going with a JWT just to move the engagement point down more. But I would really like to test out other people's setup before I spend over half a grand on it.

No clutch should be fine still

is ur car a daily driver? are u planning on doing crazy autoX/drag/drift/etc????

if not, just go with the OEM set up...its ~$200 cheaper then JWT

I would like to give u some much important advice :
when you get down to replacing your clutch, with ANY new set up, PLEASE PLEASE PLAESE invest an extra $40 and buy stronger clutch pivot ball! the pivot ball snapped on my original oem set up, its one of the worst feeling ever, you hear a loud "thud" and you clutch pedal fall to the floor, you reaction is "FUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!"

Never heard of the pivot ball, what is its function? I'm replacing my clutch soon (with a stock kit) so do you think it is a necessary replacement?

the clutch fork pivots on the pivot ball "bolt" when you engage and disengage the clutch. and from the research ive done, a) the OEM pivot ball bolt is not as strong as needed for the job b) the transmission main shaft isn't lubed enough from the factory, causing us to have a harden then normal clutch pedal, a+b= SNAP! (this happened to me just 2 weeks ago, PITA!)

It really affects the 2003 g35/350z, and less frequently affects the 04 and up, buy why gamble over a $40 part and dropping the tranny again to replace a bolt that takes 3 mins to do?

here are some other threads i found so you guys will have some confirmation

http://www.6mt.net/forum/g35-coupe/3...ivot-bolt.html
http://www.350zmotoring.com/forums/3...ng-jacked.html

you can find many many many more 350z/g35 threads on this, as i believe this topic is not as made aware as it need to be!

cheers!

OP...ACT are good clutches, have had two on my previous cars. I will admit, the first time is a learning experience but after that; you will tend to know how and were the clutch will engage.

With this pedal bracket you can balance out under 1000rpm with slight bit of throttle. The removal of the spring will prevent you from having the occasional stall outs.

why the hell does my act clutch heavy duty street sprung with jwt flywheel feel lighter(easier to push), smoother(lacks an aggressive grip), and have a lower engagement point than the oem clutch/jwt flywheell.( spent to much and now i wanna cry! lol this is on my 06 g35 coupe. my 04 g35 coupe with act clutch was exactly how the thread starter described and i want that back :'(

I had a similar clutch on my M3 I did everything you could do; blend the line from 2 different mechanics, replaced slave/master cylinder and still nothing, now dropping the tranny and replacing the clutch disc! that's what people think is the problem even though it's also! good luck
