Write up: Fix that ugly peeling shift ****

I'm not sure if it's a common issue for most people, but the clearcoat on the aluminum looking plastic piece was peeling. After seeing it looking ugly for a while, I figured let me take an attempt at doing something to make it look better.

Assuming your shift **** is off, you can take the plastic piece off by prying it up and in a forward motion, toward the shift button. Once you have it off, take a piece of scotchbrite scuff pad (I used red, which is a little more course) and sand away all the existing clearcoat. At first, it won't matter what direction you sand in, just get it all off. When it is all gone, sand the piece the long direction to get a nice brushed finish. Continue until you are satisfied with results.

I finished with mine, but decided to wrap it in a gloss black vinyl I had laying around. Of course you can leave it in the brushed finish, or wrap in any vinyl or carbon wrap you like. Very simple process, and it will clean up your interior that much more. Enjoy!

And now onto pictures

It was a quick easy fix for the plastic, nothing to do with the leather. An aftermarket **** would be a nicer option though

I tried to do this, but admit I had a hard time getting the brushed Aluminum piece off..... Did you pry up the bottom of the piece? You said you pried up and towards the shift button, I tried to pry the top of the Aluminum piece upwards and bent it slightly.

Thanks!

from the back/bottom part, begin by pushing straight up, then forward...take your time pushing it so you don't break anything

True, but there was no attempt at fixing leather, just the plastic. Getting a new **** is not top priority for me right now, so I fixed what I could in the meantime

You can do what Marcus (CandlestickPark) did and use a M45 shift ****. There is some work needed to make it fit, send him a PM and im sure he would be happy to help.

i wrapped the trim on mine with CF 3M di noc. the leather on mine looked like that. i bought duplicolor vinyl and fabric paint and sprayed the leather. it looks like a rich dark black and no fading or peeling. it's like leather in a can
