Buyin 2003 G35. Problems?

Hi guys...this is my first post. I am going to buy a 2003 G35 in the next few weeks. My uncle has had it since he brought it new.

First question. Is $8000 a good price for 90,000 miles? I know he has never been in an accident and has maintained it pretty well.

Second question. He says he's never had any problems with the car so far. What are the most common problems with a 2003 G35? Any major mechanical issues you guys have faced with your cars? I define major by anything that will cost me over $250 to fix.

Third. When I go to test drive it, what all should I watch out for. Any smells, noises, strange ride. What should I check for under the hood, under the car, inside the car. What about electronics that usually go out?

I'm looking forward to being an active member here

Thanks

PS: The car and I are located in FL.

Color is black outside. Beige inside. I don't remember the rims properly, I think they are 17" though. No navigation.

Thats all I know. Thats why I want to know what I should watch out for.

This post sounds a lot like the situation I was in about 6 months back. I got an 03 w/ 88k with a clean record(for $8800) and these are the unusual things that have came up since I bought it.
  • eats gas, eats oil, eats brakes(not unusual, just a warning)
  • had to have power steering piping replaced due to leak. only one part was leaking, but could not buy just that part so it costed 400 and something to get the entire piping replaced not including labor
  • had to have radio/ac unit repaced with aftermarket unit due to shitty stock unit that would turn off every once in a while. Costed 1000 total including all parts and labor to get put in, but now I have a kick *** stereo and don't have to worry about it breaking.
  • windshield wipers have retarded jerking motion on intermittent setting due to worn out links. Only happens some days. Apparently it only costs 20-40 for new links but I have not fixed this yet because it is not the worst problem in the world.

I have an '03 with 165k on it and haven't had any major issues with the car. Things I have recently replaced:

-Upper and Lower Balljoints
-Head unit - As far as I know they all have problems so plan on replacing that immediately if it hasn't been done.
-Shocks - Shocks were done so I upgraded to coilovers
-Need to replace compression rod bushing and probably sway bar bushings but haven't yet

If you're buying from a family member you should feel pretty comfortable about your purchase as far as being honest about the car. I bought mine from a family member with 155k on the clock and had no concerns because I knew all of the maintenance schedules had been followed.

I figure I would post here instead of creating a new thread, I am looking at a 2003 Infiniti G35, located here: http://www.carsforsale.com/used_cars..._G35_155053097

The common issues I have heard are:
Lots of break dust to soft break pads, can be fixed by replacing pads with ceramic rotors or any other good aftermarket pads

Compression Rod Bushings...I can tell if these are bad if I hear a clunking sound from front suspension going over small bumps?

Leaking Valve Covers into spark plugs? Apparently this is about $1000 dollars to fix with two new valve covers but this doesn't necessarily need to be fixed because it won't affect the engine except for using up oil?

Bose Audio system commonly goes bad but I plan on replacing with a double din kit and a new in dash kenwood audio/nav system.

Things particular to this car, headlights need to be refinished (sanded down and new protective film)

Is there anything I am missing or is there anything that I am wrong about? Anything in particular that I should be looking/listening for? Is this a fair price for the car?

How big of an issue is the Valve Cover Leaking, and can anyone give me any advice on my last post?

Hey guy, replace the entire compression rod arms, not just the bushings and add wheel bearings to the list.

Do you know how much that costs, ballpark parts & service? The car has 137k miles so I am wondering if it is done yet, not sure yet if they have service records or not. Do you guys think $8000 is good price for this car, interior/exterior are in basically mint condition except for the headlight discoloration but that is like $70 for some refinishing/protective film.

I am an Acura guy so some of this is new to me, the car is for my dad and I was looking for a TL but these Infiniti G35's had excellent reliability ratings and after seeing the amount of aftermarket support available these G35's seemed like the best deal for what you pay.

About $200 for each compression rod and maybe $200 for total labor???? If you can do work on your Acuras, you should have no problem on the Gs

Thanks! Yeah I have been looking at the DIY threads and everything looks pretty great, I love Japanese reliability. Have you had any problems with the engine valve cover leaking oil into the spark plugs? Have you had any other problems? Thanks again!

Yea I have the leaking into the spark plug hole..I think you've covered all of it, you'll never know what problems will arise until you use it.

Haha, Japanese reliability. The same as all other manufacturers pretty much. Take a look at J.D. Power.

You can get an entire front suspension bushing kit for a little over $100 if you wanted to fix up and worn bushings. Control arm bushings tend to go as well.
