G35 Air Filter

I just purchased an 03 G35 Sedan with an aftermarket cold air intake. I read that paring a cold air intake with an upgraded air filter would increase power even more but I don't know where to find the air filter. Could someone help me find it and reccomend a brand of air filter to get? I heard K&N makes a decent one.

Don't waste your money, air intakes on a vq does not increase power from what I've read. It does increase sound though lol. Your just making the engine breathe better not increasing power.

Generally aftermarket intakes come with some sort of upgraded filter. If you know the brand of the intake, finding out what filter they use shouldn't be too hard via google.

At best an intake gives you maybe 5 hp more but that's generally after you've opened up the exhaust with downpipes or high flow cats, larger y-pipe and exhaust. If the motor is stock, gains are very minimal.

Welcome to G35 Driver Daniel! Aftermarket CAI, it would help if we knew which one or what type of filter is on there now? If it's a cone filter K&N would be your best option since they're easily obtainable at most auto parts stores. They also need to be cleaned, for $10 you can buy the cleaning kit...read the instructions carefully! Again Daniel, welcome to driver & enjoy the ride...Gary

I'm curious too except immwonderingnifnubshould go with a OEM type paper filter or get a reusable cloth K&N type filter. I feel like cloth might increase horsepower slightly bit is it at the cost of torque? Because I prefer torque. Or maybe the K&N just shifts power toward higher rpm? Hoping someone can clarify for me.

Any power difference will be minimal at best. The main reason to use an after market filter is the ability to clean it instead of replace it.

Thanks for the info there, and my apologies for the plethora of typos in my comment above. I'm still curious what type of power difference people think you would see from paper vs cloth filter. (Specifically hp on torque and at what rpm range) Since in our cars the increase is negligible this is theoretic.

Any new filter compared to an old dirty one will show at least some gains. But new versus new? You'd be lucky to pick up 2-3 hp. Usually the stock intake provided enough air for a stock engine. You don't really start getting any gains on the intake side until you improve exhaust flow enough that the factory intake becomes a restriction.

Usually a sportier design like the G35 has a better stock design. Case in point. Same K&N intake on an Acura TL with a 3.2 V6 shows a 7 hp advertised gain while it's 10 hp (again, advertised claims) on the Accord V6 with the 3.0. Why? The TL, like the G35 has a better intake design that takes cooler air from the front of the car and gives it a more direct path to the throttle body than the Accord.

If your car is otherwise stock, just not much to be gained (there is a huge intake dyno thread here: https://g35driver.com/forums/intake-...s-results.html ) other than some sound. Best combo for stock would be a Z-tube and an upgraded (cleanable) panel filter for the stock intake.

Back to the individual that started this thread without making a half dozen sidetracks! Daniel, measure the diameter of the aftermarket CAI on your G, most quality auto parts stores will have a K&N filer that will work for you. Other company's have filters like HKS (foam filter) but they're nothing close to K&N's quality...I've used them in the past!
