Shorter V-belt needed for Alternator belt

Hi,
I know there are a lot of posts about their cars squealing upon start up....and the belt isn't tight, etc.
I replaced the tensioner bolt and pulley for the alternator v-belt a while back...I thought I fixed it...and did for a little while (maybe 5K miles).
It was squealing again so I decided to tighten it again...it never got any tighter while I was turning the bolt and I busted the tensioner bolt.
What I discovered was the pulley was already at its tightest position....and the belt was still too lose.

So, I'm guessing I need to get a belt that is about 1/4" or 1/2" or so smaller than our stock one (PN 117204P102)...which is 1175mm.
So...maybe a 1170mm or 1165mm.

Has anyone purchased a smaller size belt for their alternator...and it fixed the squealing problem?....
Thanks

Is it possible the previous owner did the idler pulley delete mod? Requires a shorter belt if so

Are you loosening the idler pulley bolt, adjusting the tension, then tighten the idler pulley bolt when finished? Does it just squeal when raining and mornings or all the time? Just trying to figure out why you wouldn't have enough slack in your adjustment because I just did my 04' and 05' and haven't run into that issue before.

I broke my adjustment bolt on my G20 when I did it the first time. I didn't get the set bolt loose enough (which is the idler pulley bolt on G35's) and it broke the adjustment bolt clean off. You could also pull the adjustment plate off and inspect the full travel. It's only 3 bolts to remove the assembly. Just trying to think of any ideas or things to check.

Hi Folks...
OK...so my G35x sedan is a 2006. Supposedly during this production year the belt size changed.
Up to this point, I would always call the dealer and give them my VIN and they always told me the correct belt is the longer one.
I always believed them and kept buying the longer belt....until now....
I loosened the pulley bolt and tried tightening the adjuster belt...the belt would just never get any tighter....and I forced it and broke the bolt.
When I removed everything this time, I noticed that the pulley was at its highest position (tightest belt position).
So, I was thinking I need a shorter belt....
Today I got a new adjuster bolt....and a new belt..I got a belt that was 1" shorter....and bingo.... it fit and I have plenty of range to tighten the belt now.
Belt is tight...no more squealing...

So, for those of you with a 2006....EVEN if the dealer tells you that the correct belt is the longer one...that MIGHT NOT BE THE CASE.
Just wanted to share my findings.

It would be cool if you listed the part number of the belt that worked. A lot of our newer members might not know what you mean by "shorter" or "longer" belt.

Glad you resolved the problem.

That's why I always look at the belt # when I take it off of the car and compare it to the new one. The number on the belt usually relates to the length in metric.

The longer belt Nissan part number is 117204P102....and on the belt it says 1175 on it somewhere...which means 1175mm.
I believe the Nissan shorter belt number is 117204P10A.

I didn't purchase that belt because all the dealers I called said they would have to special order it...and it would cost $60+
I called up my local NAPA parts store...and gave them the long belt part number...and said I need something about 1" shorter.
The NAPA part number they gave me was 25-060450.... $23

I believe the long belt is around 46.25" (1175mm = 46.25 in)...shorter one is about 45.25in..

That's weird... I just looked up belts on Rockauto.com for my 2004 and 2005 and also your 2006 and they have the same selection for alternator / PS belt on all of the 04'-06'. The Dayco 5060463 shows 1174mm OD length, the Gates K060465 shows 1195mm OD length. I would guess some cars might have a different alternator pulley for higher output thus needing a slightly different length?

I also have a 2005 G35x sedan...and on that one, the longer one seems to fit...I'm able to adjust that one with no issues.
...but on my 2006 G35x sedan...not sure why, but the shorter belt was needed....
I'm the 3rd owner... I'm pretty sure the second owner never changed pulleys, etc to cause a short belt to be used.
When I bought it from him he kept saying the only issue he had with the car was a squealing belt....and that it had been replaced many times by his mechanic...and it still squealed....and now I know why.... they kept putting on the longer belt...

I think halfway between 2006 in the sedan models Infiniti did the idler delete themselves and it didn't go into affect on the coupes until the 07 model. I have an 06 coupe and did the mod myself and have to buy an 07 belt from now on (also remember it myself, lol).

If you've got an aluminum crank pulley, belts can be an issue or so I've read. Adjust the belt tensioner 1/2 way from the bottoming out position. Take a string and wrap it around the pulleys mimicking the belt and measure the length of the string. Then call up Continental or Goodyear and ask'em for the belt # for 6 rib pulleys and the length you need in the Continental "Elite" or Goodyear "Gatorback". Squeal-free.

Do you know what belt size is correct for the 2007 g35 coupe?
