Absolutely right guys. If I remember correctly, the turning circle for the G35 is 39ft and the Nissan Maxima is 44ft. That's a 5 ft. difference, which is huge for a radius.
Believe it or not the turning circle was crucial for the purchase of the '05 G35 over the '05 Maxima. It's the difference between making a complete U-Turn with ease or stopping at the curb and reversing looking like a fool.

I originally owned a 2k2 maxima. With the exception of o2 sensors failing, otherwise no problems. Annoyances were the turning radius, handling and wind noise from the windows.
Unlike alot of people here I like the 6th gen max. And was in the process of getting one. It was roomier, quieter, felt like a more solid platform than the 5th gen. I must confess that I did not like it when it first premiered. But all of that changed when I got a 6th gen as a rental. I then went and test drove a 6sp which was almost a deal closer. Plus could have gotten it much cheaper than the g.
Well fate interceded one tues afternoon. The wife and I were out and passed by the infiniti dealership. I made one of my usual comments about how I love the looks of the coupe and sedan. She said lets go test drive one since we arent doing anything. Well we did(04 sedan 6sp). Instant conversion, loved everything about the car. This was Oct 04 and they didnt have any sedan 6sp w/nav so we placed an order.
Fastforward Feb now in possession of and plan to keep until I we can afford a M3.

I can only hope to make those types of gains in my G35. The 4th gen (95-99) chassis is superlight (2900-3000lbs) therefore it's got great power to weight. Now guys are swapping 3.5s into the 4th gens. These cars will easily run in the 12s on drag tires because getting 235-245whp is a no brainer. One 5th gen owner (3.5 02 SE 6 speed, 260whp) has already run 12.8@108mph with bolt-ons, deeper gear, slicks, no passenger seats, and a 12lb battery. Raceweight with driver was 3100lbs. A handful of other 02-03s are in the mid 13 to high 13s on street tires. The quicker turbo Maximas are in the 11.5@118mph-11.9@124mph while most are in the 12s. Turbo kits are easy installs on these cars and the motor will happily take 400whp with no internal work what so ever. It's as if 3.0 VQ was made for boost.
Maximas are easy to go fast, but making it handle, brake, and ride well is a different story. The McPherson strut setup in the front and torsion beam rear axle are great for packaging and weight reduction, but you can only push the suspension so far. The car starts out with limited wheel travel for stock and lowering greatly reduces ride quality. I had H&Rs, Koni yellows, and subframe connectors on my 96 and the car handled and rode quite nicely, but it can't compare to my 03 G35. Same goes for the brakes. No comparsion. Both cars would probably generate similiar handling and braking numbers, but the G would do it in a far more controlled manner. That goes a long way. Don't get me started about the advantages of RWD
Me choosing the G35 was a natural progression and the Maxima crowd as a whole agrees that the 6th gen Maxima should have been the G35 sedan. Only a select few of the avid Maxima owners like the 6th Maxima. My G35 is far more refined and comfortable than my Maxima ever was, but the it should be seeing that it's a 7 year newer car. I hope my G35 is as bulletproof as my Maxima was. 160 1/4 mile passes with 3000-4500rpm launches on the stock 113K mile clutch. Never slipped once.

Now that we've heard what a bunch of G owners have to say, I wonder what the reverse argument would be from the Max side.

I've spent 6 years over at Maxima.org and the majority of the Maxima group has their sights set on the G35 sedan/coupe or 350z as their Maxima replacement. More often than not, when someone sells their Maxima it's for one of these four cars:1) G35 coupe
2) 350Z
3) G35 sedan
4) WRX/WRX STI

G35 = Full Sports Sedan
Maxima = 1/2 Sports Sedan
The overall package is more sportier in the G35.... Even tho the Maxima is just about as quick, It's handling is not on par with the G35... Bottom line is a FWD car will never be considered a true sports sedan regardless of how good it is..
Although I would have no problems owning a Maxima

I test drove the 05 altima with the vq engine and was quite impressed by the pull of the car. I also noted the interior quality as ok. I then drove a 04 max and the car had more buttons and gadgets than I could take in. It also pulled hard, but I truely noticed the torque steer and turning radius. Plus the weight of the car was noticeable. Then a week later I drove the G. It was like night and day. The G had cornering, acceleration, braking, etc. Plus the interior quality was better IMHO. Bang for buck you'll be hard pressed to find better than the G!
