Can you just change the u-joint on the OEM front propeller driveshaft?

Hi all, new to the forum, but I have been reading a lot of good content the last 2 weeks. I'm getting a 2006 G35x Sedan for a project car to work on with my son. I've been out of the scene since he was born. One of the items is a rusting u-joint on the front propeller driveshaft. I used to be able to swap a $28 u-joint and reinstall the driveshaft, but I have a feeling I can't do that with the OEM.

I don't see a part number for the u-joint, nor any listing of it on the usual parts sites and I see "CAUTION: Do not dissemble joints" in the service manuals. Can anyone confirm?

If I need to buy a new front driveshaft, any suggestions?

The OEM is $599.
Doorman is $308.79 https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...432547&jsn=396
$288 https://www.wholesaleimportparts.com...shaft_2006.php
$200 https://www.wholesalepartsexpress.co...shaft-g35-awd/

Which one to trust/get?

I got mine on Ebay last year for just under a hundred. Been holding up under boost so I guess it's decent quality for the $$$. I thought about taking an old one up to a drive shaft shop and having heavy duty U joints installed and a balance.

Thanks! Such a big price difference. Looks like you can separate the u joint on this one. Running well for you?

Most of those "non-serviceable" u-joints use a factory teflon/nylon/plastic seal to hold them in place and you can hold a torch on the yoke on the side of the bearing cap for a minute and it will boil the plastic out after a minute or so, then you can just hammer or press the joint out normally. Each of the bearing caps would need this done.

It's easy to see if the U-joint is one of the injection seal kind because there will be little holes drilled on the side of the yoke where they injected it and usually a little plastic left over making a sort of "cap" over the hole.

The aftermarket replacement u-joints will have a groove in the bearing cap for a snap ring on the inside of the yoke.

I've never tried removing one on a G35 so I can't confirm this but it's the typical method for ones that don't have a factory snap ring.

Hi guys,

Anybody know what aftermarket manufacture and part number I need for the U Joint propeller shaft? I had bought one off ebay but they all are 20mm x 52mm. When I went under the car it looks like the U joint was much bigger approximately 31mm diameter of u joint cap and 75mm from cap to cap. I forgot to get a measurement from where a snap ring to a snap ring would be. Any help would be appreciated thanks!
