The "black thing" is a c-clip and yeah it's probably what's holding the **** on. I've never taken the auto **** off though.

Mine is an auto coupe. I only have a metal clip on mine holding it down. I didnt know they came with a c-clip from factory.

Just go down to a parts house and buy the variety pack of generic c-clips, those should have one that will fit.

Also, I've been generically referring to them as "c-clip", the one you need is actually an "E-clip" since it has the little middle protrusion.

You can also probably use a paperclip and a pair of pliers to make a retainer that will work, wrap the paperclip around into the groove then take the pliers and twist the ends of the paperclip tightly, fold over the pointy ends, done.
