That pesky little compass

Ok...so I've thought about this for awhile so as to avoid embarrassing myself...But can anyone give me a GOOD reason why there is an on/off switch for the compass? I mean....whew...thank God I can turn it off...but why would I?

The button also calibrates the compass if you hold it down..

Maybe that's why the transmission shifts so slowly.. the computer's too busy thinking, "Now, which way was I going again? Oh, wait.. he want's third gear.. now, southeast? northwest? I'm getting confused! Why couldn't he have sprung for the nav system?"
