The shift lock is also to keep small kids in parking lots who climb over into the front seat while dad is parked with car/ac on and the kid throws the center console shifter into gear.

I think they should stay locked, and automatically unlock when you open the door handle.
Regardless - unfortunately the G doesn't auto-lock. I will miss that feature.
