'05 Manumatic Shifting Questions

Do you shift, in manumatic, based on RPM or speed or engine sound? I think this is a question of style.

When the car is moving in manumatic with the indicator reading 4m, as the car slows (say from 40mph to 5mph), will the tranny downshifts automatically or will it hold in the fourth gear?

I shift based on purpose. Rarely do I approach redline.

My understanding is that the car will return to 1st gear upon full stop. I've never left my car in so tall a gear at so slow a speed so I can't provide an exact answer to the scenario you state...

As I slow, I downshift myself accordingly.

I've seen my tranny downshift like this...5th, 4th, 3rd, 1st as I slow my speed to a stop.

I've never seen it hit 2nd gear. It skips it, unless i didn't notice it.

The manumatic will shift smoother depending on how you are pressing the throttle. You just have to get used to it and it'll be a little smoother. If you press the throttle hard and try to short shift, you will get a harsher shift because the TCU isn't expecting it. If you press the throttle lightly and then shift when you normally see the computer shift, it will shift smoother. Get a feeling for the car and it will be more rewarding

I started by watching what the car did when it was in Drive, seems like it wants to up shift in the 2500-3000rpm range (easy accelerating) if you gun it, it shifts at higher rpm's.

So when I first started using MM mode I started by emulating Drive mode then branched out and got more aggressive from there.

As far as down shifting goes, MM mode seems to do a good job of that by its self.

I tend to use MM mode most often when stuck in traffic to prevent constant shifting that occurs when in Drive.

transmission question?

I'm not to up on these Manumatic Transmissions, the owners manual doesn't give much information.I wanted to ask if this car has an overdrive .I've been driving mine in the D position. Is this where it should be or is there another gear that you drive in?
Thanks

I have seen my car automatically downshift from 5 to 4 to 3 and then skip down to 1. I have never seen it shift to 2nd by itself. Another question, 2nd gear goes all the way up to 60 mph, is it safe to downshift into 2nd at 50 mph at around 4-5k rpm? Another thing, someone told me it is not good to manually shift into 1st gear and to let the car do it on its own when you come to a stop. Is that true or can I downshift into 1st like I do with my other gears?

It skips 2nd gear (at least for sedans) is because 2nd gear is a bit jerky and it might rev a bit higher. As for downshifting at 50mph at high rev...yeah it's fine just as long as you gas it after you do the shift otherwise the engine will think you are downshifting to do engine brake...

There is no need to shift into 1st using mm...? why would you want to do that? the car will have a sudden jerk...

You can drive in D or in MM. I would say I drive in MM most of the time and just leave it in D in bad rainy weathers, etc.

You can shift down into 1, where it will go if you come to a stop. You might want to do it at times for better acceleration before the transmission does it.

As a lifetime "automatic" driver... Can someone explain the shifting philosophy of manual shift mode?

In what conditions do you shift up / down?

I know you can use the transmission / engine for braking asistance - and also when passing... How can I learn more about using the "manumatic"? The owners manual doesn't help much really.

Forgive the newbie question. I pick up my G on Monday

Give him a break and let him drive how he wants . He just might not have to press in the clutch like you .
