Factory ordering a G or not

I'm looking for a base Diamond Graphite 6mt sedan. All the 6mt's I find in my area are loaded with options and cost more (at least 5k) than I want to spend. If I factory order the car I want, I would expect it to be difficult to negotiate the price or get shafted in financing. I could also then get screwed if the ordered car has the wrong color or options. Then there is the wait which could be a few months or much more. Is it better to just find a G with a few extra options and work a good deal? Any advice?

We ordered ours, took 5 months to get it. Remember, they have to order it (from Japan), build it (in Japan), ship it (on the slow boat from Japan), truck it to your dealer. We put $500 down in a check (did not cash) and waited and waited, and waited. Got the same deal as one on the lot.

Was it worth it?

DAMN SKIPPY IT WAS!!!!

For me it is absolutely worth the wait to order from the factory. Are you patient enough?

Well, for me so far with Infiniti, I have always found what I wanted on the lot, so I'm happy, but I have ordered the past three vehicles I owned prior to my '04 G35 because I couldn't find an exact match on the lot, so I'd definitely do it again if the need arose! LOL, hey Colin, my '00 Mustang GT convertible took almost 4 months to get, but it was worth it!

That's funny. In a "I'm doing the exact same thing" sorta way.

Want the same car. Color. And no options (though I'd pay for the aero kit).

Anyways, I was able to find one (in the wrong color) I can drive a few hours to get, but it's the wrong color.

The dealer in my town is doing a locate for one, but it'll cost me $400 to bring it in. Not even sure from how far away they'll pull cars in for the $400.

Personally, only you can answer these questions. If it worth the wait and the extra money for you to get what you want? Or would you rather save the cash and the time and just find something close? That's a *you* question.

Personally, I'm pretty open to color even though I want graphite. Only about 3 colors I'd turn down. Rest are fine. Packages, I'm just not paying for the premium. Car's already loaded by my standards as the base package and I'm buy it for the *sport sedan* more then the luxury.

Don't expect the dealer to find it for you. Go to Infiniti's website and find it yourself!

What's wrong with asking the dealer to find one besides the $400 (which to me is cheaper then say driving 8+ hours to find one)?

Actually had some help online asking people if there's 6MT sedans in there area, which lead me to find one that's about a 3 hour and change drive away that is acceptable. But I was going to give the dealer the chance to see if he could grab one in the color I want.

But sounds like you're saying there's a catch or something wrong with asking the dealer to find one. I already used the website to look at inventory from about the 12 dealerships within about an 8 hours drive from me and only found 3 6MT's, of which only one I'd consider buying.

My dealer in Lexington, Ky found mine (same car btw) after looking for a week, about 75 miles away in Louisville. That was a month ago though.

There is NOTHING wrong with the dealer finding you a car! IF HE WILL DO IT. He has no incentive to do that. He wants to sell a car he has on the lot. All I am saying is, look on the website, build your car and use the locator. You may be surprised.

why do you want a base 6MT sedan? Do you not want the added extra weight of the options or would the payment be too high on a nicely equipped car?

With 2.9% financing on a 60 moth loan assuming an 8.25% tax rate, your payment on each thousand borrowed would be roughly $20 more a month. for me, I like to have all the nice stuff. The loaners I have had were always low option models. I would kick myself for scrimping just to save $60 a month.

Another aspect to think about is resale value. The 6MT is the red headed step child of G35's. The only people that specifically seek out a 6MT are gear heads like us. a used car buyer faced with the decision of buying a nicely equipped car or a bare bones version, 9 times out of 10 they would choose the optioned car.

I can't speak for jawjaw of course, but I wanted the base 6mt b/c it has what I wanted in a car. I tend to keep my cars a long time (traded an '87 mazda turbo 626 sedan). I didn't give a thought to resale; just got what I wanted.

I want a base 6mt mostly because of the cost and what docypoo said. It doesn't matter what the monthly payment is, you still have to pay for those expensive options and more with interest. I am still paying off other loans and will need a family car in a few years so cost is very important. I also don't really care about any of the options other than the upgraded stereo and maybe the nav.

Thanks for all the help guys. I like to get as much information as I can before I go to the dealer. I'm not really a patient guy. I've been waiting to get a G35 sedan ever since they came out. It's kind of a dream car for me so I don't want to wait any longer. But if that's what it takes, then I can do it.

FYI:

I just closed on a graphite 6MT sedan with the aero kit (with rear spoiler) and sunroof as the only packages. IMO got a super deal on it.

However, there was ONE that I could have got that was a graphite 6MT sedan with zero installed packages. I just really wanted the spoiler

So it is out there on a lot for you. Ask your dealer to do a locate.

The dealer I purchased from (Prebul Infiniti in Chattanooga) was going to offer me $500 over invoice to order what I wanted, and they had what I wanted on the lot except for the interior color. I ended up getting the one on the lot for invoice, so I would say it depends on the dealer. Couldn't get that good of a deal here in Atlanta.

Then I would say its not your ordered car...more ammo for a better deal if this means you have to wait, again.

Also, we are probably past being able to order an 05 by now. When I talked with a dealer about when's the last time I could, he said late May, early June. Now you've got to decide if you like the 06 or not, without knowing what's changed.

Let the dealer find you one, but make sure you know it's history and miles. My wife almost took delivery of an MDX that the local dealer found on another lot, until we found out it had 200 miles on it.
