I've been going to Field's in Glencoe. Wasn't happy with the way they dealt with my brake issue the first time. I'll give them on more chance before I decide to do business elswhere..

 

The brakes on the 6mt should last longer than the brakes on the auto. If you can't figure out why- hang your head in shame and scroll down a bit.









because with a stick you can downshift to slow the car rather than brake.

no, dont hang your head down in shame. we have tiptronics, and we are also able to downshift to slow as well (which I occasionally do).

05 G35x (which comes with the 03-04 breaks) no problems, just squeeling at about 5,000 miles. Had the rear rotors resurfaced and pads replaced under warrenty, but the rotors still screech. Not a big deal, the breaks still feel very nice, and stop much better than many other cars on the road. Friends and family complain about the touchy breaks, and think it is something that has to be fixed. I have become used to it, and dont really mind anymore. The surface of the rotors feel like washboards...I dont know if that is normal, but once again, the breaks still perform very nicely.

I am pretty easy on the breaks...but I go get stuck in traffic, and I drive 98% city.

Answer to JSCHULZ's question about what dealer I went to for my brakes issue in IL.

It's Infiniti of Orland Park. I've had pretty good experiences there overall.

Wife drives a 2004 Infiniti G35 Sedan...

1 set of fronts at 6K, new pads and rotors turned

I think we have replaced either the fronts rears again I can't quite remember. The brakes are a BIG bummer...

 

2005 G35x

rear rotors turned and pads replaced at 9000 miles

Now 12100 miles

And according to dealer fronts are at 3mm and rotors need to be turned to the tune of $335.

Rears are at 7mm.

Going to fight this till the end

This car sucks.

 

2004 MT Coupe (Brembos)
At ~20k uneven brake wear ate the front right rotor. The inner pad wore down to nothing while the outer pad had plenty of material left. No squeal indication since the squeal bar is only on the outer pad. Dealer replaced that rotor, caliper and all front pads under warranty.

Two months ago at ~36k the same thing happened to the right rear, but this time the outer pad was *almost* down to the squeal bar. This happened right after a major service inspection by the dealer. Dealer warranted the rotor, but made us pay for new pads. The deemed that caliper OK.

BTW, it took a week for the dealer to get the pads in. They claimed that a new design had just been made available and were in short supply. Anyone else heard that story? Fortunately they provided a G35 sedan while we waited. (The sedan sure made us appreciate our coupe that much more.)

I'll be checking the pads regularly from now on, including a good look at the inside pads (which is not so easy to do.)

 

What's the average number of miles brakes are expected to last?

I purchased a used '04 coupe; it has over 18k and seems to be ok.

 

why? you were having more fun with your coupe and the brake problems?

 

How many miles when you bought it? If it's an AT, it probably had brakes already.

 

Yes, even with brake problems the coupe is far more fun than driving a bus.

 

Yes, but isn't there some potential cost associated with the increased wear and tear on your transmission? Perhaps that depends on how well the transmission is built.
