Also bear in mind that just as the Titan and G35 are not representative of all Nissan vehicles (it was the tires on the 350z, not the transmission or brakes), the transmission issues with your G35 and previous Nissan are also not representative of all Nissans.
Guess you've not been keeping up with your g35driver threads than have you.

I bought a 4th Nissan after the last disaster because at least I have a loaner car. So I abuse the crap out of it to get back at nissan =P. JK, I figured all cars would have problems, at least if I have a loaner car I will survive.

haha I admit to not checking this forum too often... most of my time is wasted on Off Topic and it's sub forums. You could always go with a BMW. Free maintenance.

I could have worded that better.

My mechanic meant that the brakes were undersized from a wear standpoint, not performance. As background, I had asked him about the G35 brake issues I had heard about. He said that he does a lot of brake work on G35s. And the comment about the brakes being undersized came after I asked him why the brakes appeared to be a problem.

Just got my 05 5AT back from dealer with 23,000 miles. The front rotors were warped and they resurfaced them under warraanty-problem with judder is gone. Original pads are near needing replacement, but work fine still.

And can anyone comment on what exactly causes the brakes to wear so quickly?

I asked my mechanic about it and he thought the pads might be undersized for the weight of the car.

I asked a G35 owner last week about the car and she absolutely loved it. But she rolled her eyes when I asked about the brakes. She then added that replacement tires ran about $200 each.

I've been seriously looking at used G35 sedans in my area but I really don't want a car that's going to be a money pit.

So far, after only a week on the caramics, I really like them! Brake dust is significantly lower with the Akebono's, which I really love, and braking performance is still very good. I don't really know if they'll last longer, but it is possible.

The Brembo replacement rotors I got from Tire Rack for $55 per rotor. Very good deal IMO, but I was unable to get the stock rotors off. So...next time I need brakes, I will just have the dealer install those rotors. Never pay for dealer parts!

Tires should not be $200 a piece for the sedan!! Unless you replace with the original Bridgestone EL-42s, which are complete crap for this car and are way way overpriced to boot. That tire belongs on a minivan! I am about to purchase new tires from Tire Rack, and am going with a larger size (235/50/17) for only $128 per tire (Firestone Wide Oval). Other tires can be had for even less than that, depending on what you want!

I have had my G35 sedan since Sept 2002, and it has definitely NOT been a money pit. I haven't really spent a dime on it, until just recently, when I purchased some of those brake parts. But, I think at 40K, that is normal maintainence anyway, so it's not something I consider a waste.

As to why the brakes wear so quickly....well, it was said once in a car rag reviewing the G, that the G35 has braking comparable to a Vette. The way I see it is that with that level of performance comes higher wear. You just don't get superior performance with less wear. It's a trade off I'm more than willing to live with.

Hope that helps!

Mike

Mike,

Thank you for all the details. That was very helpful.

In retrospect, it occurs to me that the driver that mentioned the $200 tires had a G35 coupe not a sedan. So that was my mistake.
