g35 chippie, is it true that 70% is allowed for front sides, or is it zero? I'd like a little UV protection here in the almost-always sunny Antelope Valley, and want to be sure. Thanks.

Tint is not allowed on the front windows or the windshield except for a small section at the top of the window. The rear windows and rear windshield are good to go, sky's the limit. Read California Vehicle Code 26708(a) VC. Some people interpret it differently. The long and short of it is no tint and I usually cite it every day. I stopped a guy yesterday cause he had limo tint on the front side windows. I told him over the PA to roll his windows down. No way I'm walking up on that car with those windows. He told me he couldn't see his passenger side mirror at night. Hmmm.... Understand why we write tickets for it now? My safety and yours. I don't mind the light tint and I usually don't even bother stopping the car. It's the real dark ones I'm after. Just a little info for you all into the mind set of a cop.

Check it out. Vehicle code online.

I got 35% front and got pulled over twice. To be safe, I think 50% is will do IMO. However I like my 35% front and 20% back.

Here in Iowa the tint law is 70% on the front side windows and no limit to the back. I have 35% on the front and 20% on the backs. I got pulled over twice within 20 miles for windows being to dark. Luckily only one ticket. I've had the car for a year and a half and that is the first time to be pulled over for the tint. Probably going to have to take the tint off of the fronts, cause it really isn't worth another ticket. Plus it's the wife's car and now she is paranoid as hell to drive an illegal car.

It's 88% on front side windows in Cali--essentially factory tint, but no darker:
VC26708(d)

Notwithstanding subdivision (a), clear, colorless, and transparent material may be installed, affixed, or applied to the front side windows, located to the immediate left and right of the front seat if the following conditions are met:

(1) The material has a minimum visible light transmittance of 88 percent.

Clear and colorless. What tint is clear and colorless? Read on, there are other conditions as well. It doesn' say "if 'one' of the following conditions are met," it says "if the following conditions are met." No one has ever handed me "official" documentation.
