Well it finally happened...

I buy a new car every 2-3 years putting 50-70k on them due to my high commuting, and tonight my 05 6MT with 20K miles died on the highway...

I was travelling around 80 or so when I pressed the gas a bit further and it started bucking and losing power as if I was either out of gas or had water in tank or something, but my tank was half full. I let it coast to a stop on the side of the highway near an exit and kept trying to keep it runing but it was popping, bucking and shaking the car like crazy when trying to give it gas. If i let the cluth out, it would die, and the service engine soon light came on as well as the DVC and SLIP lights and they wouldnt go out. After letting it sit for a minute, and starting it up again, i was able to rev it slowly and high enough to slip the clutch and get it rolling and pushed it the 1/4 mile off the exit and to a parking meter.

Talk about pissed...I buy new cars to avoid this ****.

The good thing was Infiniti Roadside had the tow guy there in 45 min and flat bedded it to the dealer 20 miles away and tomorrow Ill go to the dealer to pick up a loaner.

Sorry for the long post....

The obvious things, wet engine, puddle, bad gas, all seem out of the question...cant wait to find out what it is...

anyone else ever experience this?

Ill let you know how it goes.

I agree. Most likely MAF sensor. I can't think of any other reason it would do this.

The guys above are right on. I had an MAF go on my Altima and experienced the exact same symptoms...........Sucks, but an easy fix.

Are MAFs still going on the 3.5? I had mine go on the 2k2 Maxima. It seemed to be a common problem. Is this common with the G?

Thanks.

My research on the Altima boards showed that Nissan changed the MAF they were putting on their cars. Yes, this was a common problem on Alti/Max cars a couple of years ago. I think the new MAF, a Bosch unit, if I'm not mistaken, cured the problem.

As usual, everyone chimed in on their own speculation as to why the MAF's were going. Lots of folks were pointing to CAI/WAI's. Nissan finally admitted to the problem, but never issued a recall. So if you were out of warranty, you were SOL (as was the case with me).

I doubt this will be a problem for our cars, due to Nissan's switch.

MAF huh? Lets hope its a quick and easy fix, but with so many that have gone in the past wouldn't you think this problem would be resolved by now?

Will let you know...thanks for the speculation. Does sound right. At least ill put two days of miles on their loaner instead of mine.

The G35 doesn't have a MAF issue like the Altimas/Maximas did. So you probably just have a defective one or some debri hit the maf.

Sure did **** me off....car is 8mo old with 20K on it. Bucking and dying to the curb...nearly had a coronary pushing it.

Wierd thing is, I went back to it 20 min later before the flat bed arrived, and it started up fine and seemed to rev just fine. And then went to the dealer where they towed it the next day to get some stuff out of it, and it started up fine and reved like mad...other than the service engine soon light, you wouldnt know anything wrong. very strange....I better not get a call today from them saying NTF....

I had that go on my 2k2 Maxima. It's actually 3 sensors that were quite simple to replace. Mine just triggered SES light and a mild 'jitter' in revs, just once - ran fine after that, but light wouldn't go out so I took it in right away. I forget the cost, I think about $180CDN parts and labour.

Never acted up after it was replaced, but I only kept the car another 20,000kms after that.

Good luck.

Albert
