HELP! My 2005 G35x /w 5000km is smoking!
Guys,
I picked up my 2005 G35x over 2 months ago ... I've put about 5,500km on the car since I got it.
I know new cars during the first little while does 'smoke' a little since the welds are new, and there's various 'oils' lingering on the pipes. But for some odd reason even after 5,500km my G still has smoke FLOWING out of the very TOP part of the engine bay after a normal run on the highway. I can't get a good look of what's doing it, since its at the very top.
The smoke isn't rancid as a misused clutch or brake pads after a track day. It just smells a little 'like overheated metal'
Should I be concerned? I've been waiting till I bring it in for my first oil change. Or should I bring it in ASAP?
None of the warning lights have come on.

C.
If it smells like metal it could be antifreeze dripping. In any case, let the dealer see it soon, but check your fluids regularly until the dealer sees it. Mine had the engine-protecting-material-burn-off smell for may be 3-5000 miles, more intermittently as time went on.

It took me months and many miles to get rid of the oder/smoke generated by the new engine/exhaust protective coatings. That's all it was and probably is in your case too. As I worked for Infiniti at the time, I frequently saw the same happen to many others and was aware of the likelihood it was no biggie. Keep an eye on it, but don't get overly concerned. It seemed to be more prevalent in cars bought in the fall and winter....can't say why however....maybe cooler temps made the 'burn off' take longer???? Good luck, jbx

There is one little VQ35 gotcha that might be in play. The wizards who designed the engine placed the oil filler directly above the little opening in the block into which the dipstick threads. In a Maxima (same engine, of course, just sideways...) I saw, there was actually a warning placard under the hood reminding the owner or mech not to add oil unless the dipstick is in place. Oddly enough, no placard in the G that I've seen (not mine, anyway). And I have to admit that I made the mistake once myself -- I added oil, with the stick out, only to have a portion of it gush out the stick opening and drip onto -- you guessed it -- the exhaust. This is merely a possible scenario, plain old cosmoline (the protective grease stuff) burnoff, or something else altogether may be to blame.
One more thing: it's very easy to remove the engine cover, and the engine runs fine without it in place (just a tad noisier without the big plastic "hat" absorbing some engine noise). With the cover off, you'll be able to see what's what much more clearly.

Big difference in the way burning cosmoline and oil smell. You'd know the difference in a heartbeat.....Besides, with only 5,500km on the car he probably hasn't had to add oil ....and he also said it started from the 'git-go'....right?
